Description: Position Description

Onsite laboratory manager for a large [29+ people] complex biological laboratory that has extensive use of rodent models. Responsible for writing all animal protocols and ensure compliance with federal guidelines with respect to animal care regulations. Ensure compliance with institutional and federal guidelines in health and safety. Onboarding of new personnel, including ensuring their training and compliance with Harvard and Federal guidelines. Maintenance of lab reagents (such as plasmids and antibodies), their databases, and handling requests. Maintenance of equipment, infrastructure, and space allocation. The position is responsible for maximizing the efficiency and effectiveness of the flow within the laboratory and managing the ever-increasing requirements to comply with chemical, microbiological, radionuclide, animal care and use and microbiological as well as general laboratory safety regulations. Provide training and supervision in these areas in the name of the principal investigator, and be able to command the respect of highly scientifically trained doctoral level scientists. Communication with vendors. Must be able to handle the financial activities within the laboratory including budget formulation, the ordering of supplies, maintenance of inventories, service contracts and repairs of equipment while maintaining attention to the sources and uses of grant funds for these needs. Initiation and management of orders using B2P and other methods, track supplies and expenditures on a daily/weekly/monthly basis. Responsible for keeping spending in check and communicating with principal investigator about spending levels and spending patterns. This position will direct the day-to-day operations of a large, internationally recognized Molecular Neurobiology Research Laboratory at Harvard Medical School and calls for a responsible, conscientious and detail-oriented individual. This person should be committed to facilitating the research goals of this hard-working group of investigators in a friendly yet authoritative manner. This position calls for a mature, intelligent and highly competent person who enjoys interacting with people and taking on projects as they present themselves. Position will also be involved with direct participation in the research efforts of the laboratory and occasionally scientific manuscripts.

Basic Qualifications

Bachelor's in science-related field required. 3+ years of relevant experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
  • Experience with mouse model research.
  • Training experience.
  • Experience in oversight of laboratory personnel and in enforcing policies and regulatory guidelines with respect to safety of lab personnel.
  • Distinguished record of safety practice and maintaining compliance.
  • Must be proactive.

    Preferred experience in academic lab managements.
  • Prior research experience in molecular biology and/or neurobiology.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Must exhibit attention to detail and have excellent organizational skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must exhibit a level of maturity and competence to maintain authority in a large laboratory.
  • Good problem solving skills.

This is a 12-month term appointment with the possibility of renewal contingent on funding.
