Job Summary and Qualifications

The RN is responsible for assessing the operative nursing care needs of patients, planning interventions and evaluating outcomes of care. The RN is responsible for providing care, which is appropriate for age specific (pediatrics, adults, and geriatrics), the developmental and safety needs, the planned procedure, and the anesthetic agent used. The RN will communicate and educate the patient and/or their family members and/or significant others regarding events pertinent to their care. The RN also anticipates and plans for the needs of the surgical team and coordinates the care provided in the Operating Room while maintaining an aseptic and safe environment.

The RN also provides direct care and/or supervises surgical technologists and non-licensed nursing staff. In addition to RN duties and responsibilities, the RN scope includes charge duties. The RN in charge makes assignments, supervises, and directs the staff and unit activities for the assigned shift.

OR PRN II pay is $58.00 per hour, 4 shifts per pay period.

What You Will Do In This Role:

  • Participates in hospital or departmental performance improvement activities.
  • Prepares the operating rooms for scheduled procedures.
  • Prepares medication as needed/ordered for the procedure.
  • Assist anesthesia as needed/requested.
  • Assures patient’s needs, rights, and privacy is respected.
  • Perform sponge, sharp and instrument counts.
  • Responsible for proper handling of specimens in the OR.
  • Monitor and control the Operating Room environment.
  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care needs of the patient.
  • Document nursing care in compliance with policies procedures and practices established by the Surgical Services Departments and the hospital.
  • Initiate and carry out nursing plan of care.
  • Administers medications, blood and blood products.
  • Provides for activities of daily living for patients.
  • Transport patients.
  • Provision of patient teaching and education related to specific procedures.
  • Attend staff meetings and inservices.
  • Provision of emotional support for patients and families based on the assessments of their coping skills.
  • Performance of nursing care in compliance with safety policies and procedures established by the hospital and Surgical Services Departments.
  • Perform special assignments as needed/requested.
  • Serves as a clinical resource to department staff, students, volunteers and other departments, and contributes to the teamwork essential to ensuring quality patient care
  • Takes appropriate measures to ensure safety of patients.
  • Responsible for a clean and tidy work environment.

What Qualifications You Will Need:

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support
  • ENPC
  • TNCC 
  • Current Texas State RN license
  • Bachelors Degree
  • 2+ yrs of OR RN experience required; Level 1 trauma preferred
