As part of the Learning Design & Training Services team the Instructional Designer (ID) is responsible for designing, implementing, and consulting on applications and technology devices that support the advancement of teaching and learning at the Harvard Business School (HBS). They assist faculty and sta? with developing sound pedagogical strategies for developing and utilizing technologies in and across the curriculum for virtual, hybrid, and in-person delivery. The ID assists in the production and delivery of training materials and end-user documentation on how to appropriately use technology solutions for both academic and administrative uses.

The ideal candidate is an energetic, quick learner who possesses superior interpersonal and communication skills. They have experience effectively consulting with faculty and business partners, developing and delivering a wide variety of technology solutions and trainings in a high-touch, enterprise- level environment. They have excellent listening and critical thinking skills and exhibit the ability to understand current processes and requirements and identify new tools or ways of working to achieve objectives. They possess superior maturity, professionalism, and judgment.

Responsibilities:

  • Consult with faculty and sta? on how HBS IT-supported technologies can be used to meet business needs which can be delivered in a number of different modalities (virtual, hybrid, in-person)
  • Coordinate services across the HBS IT and the HBS organization, so that faculty have a central point of service contact for their technology needs (maintaining streamlined and strong customer service for the faculty and programs)
  • Evaluate new technologies and their ability to meet HBS community needs
  • Serve on project teams in designing and implementing solutions that align closely with teaching, learning, and administrative goals
  • Design and create end-user documentation including eLearning, guides, and videos
  • Develop and deliver individual and group instruction with sensitivity to di?ering learning styles
  • Complete other responsibilities as assigned

Basic Qualifications

  • Minimum of two years’ post-secondary education or relevant work experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills

The two years' experience required above must be as an instructional/learning designer or equivalent in a higher education or similar environment.

The following are preferred:

  • Experience in developing instructional design strategies, policies, and procedures
  • Expertise in developing, evaluating, and redesigning face-to-face, fully virtual, and hybrid/blended content delivery
  • Expertise with Zoom
  • Expertise with one or more learning management systems
  • Expertise with one or more eLearning authoring tool (e.g., Camtasia, Captivate, Articulate)
  • Teaching or training experience
  • Strong presentation skills
  • Be flexible, open-minded, and comfortable with changing responsibilities and duties as new and additional needs become known
  • Experience with IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) and IT Service Management (ITSM)?

Working Conditions

  • Additional support outside of regularly scheduled hours, including mornings, nights, and weekends, will occasionally be required????

Additional Information

This position is approved as a term appointment with an end date of 6/30/25. There is a possibility of renewal/extension.

This role is offered as a hybrid position (some combination of onsite and remote) where you are required to be onsite at our Boston, MA-based campus on a weekly basis. Specific schedule will be determined by your manager.

We may conduct candidate interviews virtually (phone and/or via Zoom) and/or in-person for this role.
