Overview

The salary range for this position is $6,250 - $7,500 per month ($75,000 - $90,000 per year) depending upon qualifications and is non-negotiable.

KPBS serves the greater San Diego community with informative, cultural, entertaining and educational television, radio, and web programming. KPBS TV/FM is the public television and radio station for San Diego. Licensed to San Diego State University, KPBS supports and furthers the university’s educational and community service mission by informing, enlightening and empowering its audience. It does so not only by presenting national and locally produced programming of value to its San Diego audience, but also by producing programming about San Diego and its people for distribution nationwide.

The KPBS Communications and Marketing Department develops and executes strategic marketing, promotion and communication to KPBS audiences, the public, the press and internal staff about KPBS content, events, activities, audience experience and outreach. The department is responsible for managing the station’s brand via messaging, content, advertising, promotion, creative collateral, and producing public events. The department consists of the Director, Social Media Strategist, Manager of Special Events, Graphic Designer, Special Events Coordinators, Interactive Producer, and Digital Marketing Producer.

Responsibilities

The Marketing Manager works to establish a consistent audience experience for KPBS’ brand voice and message across all media channels - digital, broadcast, social media and print.

Reporting to the Director of Communications and Marketing, the Marketing Manager is responsible for planning and executing both audience-wide and personalized consumer experiences across digital and traditional channels, including web, social, email, linear radio and TV, streaming, print and events. This position will implement strategies to support audience growth goals, as well as expertise and support to content, membership, on-air fundraising and development fundraising teams.

The position supervises the Digital Marketing Producer and the Interactive Producer, and works closely with the fundraising departments to produce and execute integrated marketing plans to support specific fundraising goals and strategies.

The Marketing Manager is responsible for but not limited to:

Marketing Campaign Strategy, Implementation and Management 65%

  • Assist the Director of Communications and Marketing to develop and implement strategic external marketing campaigns with the goal of increasing audience and members on KPBS platforms.
  • Manage the implementation of multichannel campaigns (digital and traditional) from start to finish, including web, social media, database marketing, email and advertising campaigns, and track results against KPIs. Independently adjust campaigns for better results based on data analysis.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of complex marketing automation campaigns for fundraising and non-fundraising areas of the station, working in conjunction with the Digital Marketing Producer.
  • Drive the implementation of new personalization tools and a customer data platform, including managing content curation and affinity categorization within a customer data platform.
  • Collaborate with cross-department teams and serve as a key stakeholder to internal initiatives.
  • Utilize data and analytics tools to monitor and recommend actionable insight, business strategies, tactics, and decisions.
  • Stay abreast of industry trends and best practices in marketing communications and public media outreach.

Content 15%

  • Write message points, web site content and promotional copy.
  • Oversee the Interactive Producer and their focus on maintaining the KPBS Events Calendar.
  • Manage Google Ad Grant campaigns and coordinate Google Ad campaigns in conjunction with the Membership department.
  • Manage production of KPBS highlights newsletter.
  • Manage production of annual Community Service Report.
  • Produce (with the Director of Diversity Equity Inclusion and Director of Communications and Marketing) the annual DEI report to the community.

Management 10%

  • In partnership with the Director of Communications and Marketing, create an annual strategy and budget for station marketing initiatives including revenue and audience goals.
  • Supervise the Digital Marketing Producer and Interactive Producer, including conducting performance reviews and facilitating regular meetings.
  • Measure and report performance of all marketing campaigns and assess against goals (ROI and KPIs).

Media Relations 5%

  • Assists the Director of Communications and Marketing with the creation and delivery of press releases on KPBS events, announcements, programs and other newsworthy activities for distribution to local and national media.
  • Serve as back-up media contact in Director of Communications and Marketing’s absence by responding to press requests and determining appropriate response and spokesperson.

Qualifications

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Ability to manage and collaborate with internal and external clients, partners and vendors to produce successful multi-channel marketing campaigns.
  • Ability to work with teams and senior leadership with diplomacy.
  • Ability to self-direct with confidence when managing complex projects and relationships within cross-functional teams.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of online fundraising, marketing or advertising fields.
  • Deep understanding of how to supervise people and coordinate several projects in an often stressful environment and under the constraints of a tight budget and absolute deadlines.

  • Ability to write succinct and compelling messaging for different audiences.
  • Ability to work on a successful marketing campaign with measurable goals.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of working with large datasets to design effective audience segments and create personalized experiences.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Google Apps, Gmail, Microsoft Office suite of products (Word, Excel, Power Point).
  • Ability to effectively communicate and align with multiple product teams and stakeholders to drive towards common goals

Minimum Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing or relevant field, or additional experience be substituted for the required education on a year for year basis.

Minimum Experience

  • Three years of work related experience in marketing and/or communications.

Preferred Qualifications and Special Skills

  • Minimum of five years progressively responsible related professional experience
  • Knowledge of or experience with public broadcasting or nonprofit organizations.
  • Project management certification.
  • Certification in Google Ads.
  • Experience working with customer data platforms (i.e. Lytics).
  • Experience with Adobe Photoshop
