Laboratory Research Technician IV



The Wells Laboratory is an investigative tissue research lab in the Department of Pathology, University of Pittsburgh. We are dedicated to the discovery and characterization of signals that lead to tissue homeostasis and prevent pathologies. Our two main areas are cancer dormancy (with an emphasis on cancers of the breast and prostate and melanomas) and angiofibrotic pathologies of scarring in the skin and other tissues. We are also focused on discoveries that can be applied towards the clinic and products relevant to human disease.


Job Summary

Performs a variety of independent and complex laboratory work and experiments. Analyzes and interprets data, compiles results, and prepares reports. Maintains inventory, ordering, and logs. Writes manuscripts and grant proposals and prepares data visualizations.


Essential Functions
  • Maintain a clean and safe laboratory environment compliant with all regulatory requirements both at Pitt and the VA.
  • Maintain mouse breeding colonies of genetically unique mice. This includes mating, weaning, and genotyping the mice (experience required).
  • Assist in mouse surgeries for both internal surgeries and skin/dermal wounding procedures. The applicant must be able to work with controlled substances for anesthesia and analgesia (experience required).
  • Mouse necropsy and obtaining appropriate biopsies along with preparing for frozen tissues and embedding for histopathology.
  • General laboratory procedures are related to the ongoing projects.

Physical Effort

This position is sedentary but, at times, will require walking between labs
