The Kitzes Lab in the Department of Biology at the University of Pittsburgh seeks a Research Technician to work in Pittsburgh, PA, and contribute to analysis of acoustic biodiversity data sets. Will work on the application of methods for identifying the species present in field audio recordings and use statistical models to understand species spatial and temporal distributions. Will also: (i) assist in the deployment of acoustic recording hardware in Pennsylvania and beyond; (ii) manage large acoustic data sets collected by the lab; (iii) apply machine learning models to identify species present in audio data; (iv) use statistical models to extend data to estimates of species occupancy and abundance; and (vi) annotate audio for species presence through manual listening.

Must have a bachelor’s degree (or foreign equivalent degree) in Biology, Economics, Environmental Science, or a related field plus three (3) years of experience in a related position performing interdisciplinary research.

Experience must include three (3) years: (i) developing and applying machine learning models using programming languages such as R and Python, machine learning frameworks including Pytorch and TensorFlow, workflow tools such as git, GitHub, and cloud services, and advanced statistical models; (ii) managing large datasets; (iii) applying statistical models, particularly regression and causal inference approaches, to analyze complex data; and (iv) writing research reports and scientific manuscripts.

Must also be able to hike over uneven terrain for a full workday and be able to identify (or learn to identify) temperate songbirds by ear.

Experience can be concurrent.
