Position Summary


Reporting to the Senior Manager of the Western Rivers Program at Audubon Rockies, the Program Specialist is responsible for overseeing the Western Water on-the-ground project management, implementation, grant coordination and proposals, internal and external communications, and coalition collaboration with a principal focus on water and freshwater habitat issues in Colorado. The Program Specialist will need to demonstrate strong project management skills and an understanding of river restoration, hydrology, watershed science, working agriculture, and partnership-building. As part of the team, they will work with a broad array of internal and external partners to improve coordination and collaboration, to contribute to Audubon’s efforts to use science, projects, and communications to improve the reliability of water supplies for birds, freshwater habitats, and people across the Audubon Rockies territory, as well as produce timely work products throughout the year.


Additionally, the Program Specialist will partner with water stakeholders and like-minded organizations to pursue Audubon’s project objectives, including assisting in advocacy on behalf of Audubon to local, state, and federal government officials, agency staff, and decision-makers.


Compensation:


$55,000-$65,000 / year


Essential Functions


  • Manage project development, implementation, and funding. Lead activities to advance collaborative science in relationship to on-the-ground projects in the Rockies Western Rivers Initiative program.
  • Support and manage select Audubon partnerships and freshwater habitat restoration efforts to promote protecting and restoring Colorado River basin freshwater habitats for birds and communities.
  • Develop grant proposals for local, state, and federal agencies and foundations. Manage grant application and reporting requirements.
  • Lead the development of web and social communications that inform and engage members on local, state, and national conservation issues and projects to secure support for freshwater habitats.
  • To conserve birds and freshwater habitats, build productive relationships with stakeholders, including private landowners, tribal and BIPOC communities, staff from local, state, and federal agencies, and NGOs.
  • Work closely and effectively with consultants that Audubon retains for science, legal, and project work; act as a project manager and report updates to the Senior Program Manager following meetings.
  • Attend Audubon chapter, council functions and facilitate chapter volunteer, outreach, and coalition building efforts that support conservation project partnerships with chapters.

  • Qualifications and Experience


  • Bachelor’s degree in natural resources management, watershed restoration, biology, environmental policy, or related field preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.
  • Five plus years of professional experience in environmental work and/or freshwater habitat restoration work.
  • Some experience with contractor and/or volunteer coordination and management, including recruiting and training preferred.
  • Professional experience working with resource managers, landowners, and other partners in a collaborative setting.
  • Demonstrated project management skills, including ability to manage multiple dynamic projects simultaneously and prioritize key areas of focus and time.
  • Strong communication skills, writing, editing, and presentation skills required.
  • Knowledge of western water or Colorado River issues required.
  • Positive communication and interpersonal skills a must; ability to work with multiple stakeholder groups across a decentralized organization also necessary.
  • Experience working within diverse coalitions.
  • A positive self-starter with strong organizational and time/project management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team-based environment.
  • Knowledge of Intermountain West birds and ecosystems is preferred.
  • Experience working with BIPOC communities is a plus.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google, and Box applications, as well as web-based and social media tools.
  • A positive and flexible approach to work, ability to work remotely, and ability to travel and work weekends and nights as required.
  • Demonstrated interest in bird conservation and the mission of the National Audubon Society.
