Position Summary


In pursuit of Audubon's conservation mission, the Data & Technology team partners with programmatic and business teams across the organization to develop and deploy enterprise data systems and data-driven practices at the scale needed to achieve our ambitious goals. The Senior Director, Data Strategy and Measurement will play a key role in designing and managing enterprise data strategy, data products, data governance, infrastructure and technical workflows to align data needs, sources and uses across Audubon. This role will partner with and support programmatic and business teams to identify and address high impact operational and strategic goals through the development and maintenance of data and technology infrastructure, products, tools and processes that enable robust, data-driven approaches to delivering, evaluating, and communicating progress toward our mission for hemispheric level bird conservation. Additionally, the Senior Director will help build and lead a new team within Audubon Technology, operating in close partnership with the other Data & Technology teams (Data Analytics, Data Engineering, and Enterprise GIS), Audubon Conservation (including the Science Division), the Chief Strategy Integration office, and other business teams across Audubon. A successful candidate will have comfort and familiarity with a broad range of technical subject matter, as well as strengths in project management, change management, and communication among technical and non-technical stakeholders. This position reports to the Vice President of Data and Technology within the Audubon Technology team.


This is a hybrid position in our New York, NY or Washington, DC office, but we will also consider remote candidates within the United States.

  • Collaborate with teams across Audubon to identify and act on opportunities to improve the quality, integrity and utility of our data and tools, and to collect, utilize and manage programmatic and operational data in new, innovative, and robust ways to achieve our ambitious goals.

  • $160,000-$180,000/year = National
  • $180,000-$200,000/year = Alaska, CA (not San Francisco), Connecticut, D.C., Chicago, Oyster Bay, NY
  • $190,000-$210,000/year = NYC (not Oyster Bay), San Francisco, Seattle

  • Essential Functions


  • Serve as a leader within Audubon Technology with primary responsibility for designing and implementing business and programmatic data strategies, developing and managing strategic data products, and establishing and maintaining best practices related to data governance, cataloging, and documentation.
  • Lead in developing and implementing flexible and scalable approaches and frameworks to enable rapid development of data products, systems, processes and tools to address current and emerging cross-functional priorities and needs, with a keen focus on user experience, adoption and change management.
  • Act as the product owner of key strategic data products, working in collaboration with colleagues from across the Audubon data teams to ensure selection of appropriate technological approaches and tools and overseeing the product lifecycle in order to deliver high quality and efficient solutions to user-driven requirements and strategic priorities.
  • Recruit and directly manage contractors and future Data Strategy and Measurement team staff members to implement the activities above.
  • Partner with programmatic and operational leaders to define and implement data strategies, tools and methods for impact measurement, reporting, insights and data storytelling about our work in alignment with Flight Plan, Audubon’s strategic plan for hemispheric bird conservation.
  • Proactively manage and facilitate strong, collaborative partnerships among technical teams and non-technical stakeholders across the Audubon network, as well as external partners, vendors and professional networks in the conservation and social impact space.
  • Prepare written and oral reports, memos, visualizations, and presentations representing Audubon’s data strategy and data products to executives, leadership teams, technical and non-technical staff, and the public.
  • Manage contractors and vendors including software and professional services providers; participate in budget planning and tracking. Collaborate with administrative staff and IT department to administer strategic data tools and applications.

  • Qualifications and Experience


  • Master’s degree in Data Analytics/Data Science, Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or similar discipline.
  • 10+ years of directly relevant work experience developing and managing data strategies, data products, workflows, tools and processes and 3+ years of leadership experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • Proven success as a data strategy and data product leader. Strong detail-oriented execution skills, including direct experience as an individual contributor and experience leading teams to move projects from conception to completion as leader or individual contributor.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage, mentor, and develop teams of technical practitioners in a workplace environment is required.
  • Success in leading/sponsoring large data strategy, data product and data governance initiatives in matrixed organizations.
  • Experience transforming how data delivers business value in a large, federated organization is preferred.
  • Experience in impact strategy, measurement, reporting, decision support and data storytelling in conservation or other environmental or social issue spaces is required.
  • Excellent collaboration skills, with the ability to understand and apply product needs and requirements from a diverse set of organizational stakeholders, and to communicate technical information to non-technical audiences.
  • The ability to manage and maintain healthy vendor relationships, and the ability to seek and evaluate new high-quality vendors to supplement internal staff on a project-by-project basis.
  • Clear track record of success taking product ideas from concept to design to execution and linking objectives and outcomes to strategic goals.
  • Demonstrated experience applying technical coordination and project management best practices using tools such as Asana and Jira required. PMP or other relevant certification preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience preparing effective written materials, presentations, and other documentation and communication materials for internal and external audiences; direct experience building and maintaining information and knowledge management tools preferred.
  • Experience utilizing modern data infrastructure tools such as cloud data warehouses (Snowflake, BigQuery, etc), data integration tools (Fivetran, Airflow, etc), business intelligence tools (PowerBI, Sigma, etc), CRM systems (Salesforce, Everyaction, etc), and other enterprise data tools (such as Airtable) required.
  • Familiarity with SQL, Python, R, and/or other coding languages for data analytics, data science and/or data engineering required.
  • Curiosity to stay on the cusp of software and product trends in non-profits and the greater tech industry.
  • Proven success in business development and/or fundraising, preferably around data strategy and data products.
