Position Summary

The Senior Manager, Transmission Initiative, will be part of a team implementing Audubon’s Transmission Initiative through federal, state, grid operator, and local renewable energy planning processes, siting and permitting policies, and priority transmission projects. The emphasis of this work will be on the Non-CAISO, Intermountain West: Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Wyoming, Montana, Oregon, and Washington. By leading engagement with transmission developers, relevant electric grid decision-makers, advocates, and stakeholders working to modernize and expand the Western interconnection, the Senior Manager will represent Audubon’s transmission interests in the region.


Reporting to the Senior Director, Climate Strategy, who leads the Audubon Transmission Initiative, the Senior Manager will join a growing Audubon Climate team. This position will help ensure the timely build-out of climate-friendly transmission projects that are appropriately sited and operated to minimize conflicts with birds and other wildlife, working closely with Audubon staff, consultants, chapter members, industry, government agencies, and other partners.


Compensation:


Salary range based on geo-differentials:
  • $85,000-$95,000= National

  • $95,000-$105,000= Alaska, CA (not San Francisco), Connecticut, D.C., Chicago, Oyster Bay,NY

  • $100,000-$110,000= NYC, San Francisco, Seattle


  • Essential Functions
  • Working closely with the Climate Program team, state office staff, policy and conservation leaders, communications leaders, and our grassroots network of chapters and members; lead Audubon’s Western Interconnect Transmission engagement and advance Audubon’s Transmission Initiative objectives.

  • Working closely with the project developers, other stakeholders, and state decision-makers; resolve conflicts with birds and maximize conservation outcomes through emissions reductions to protect birds from impacts of climate change, and through avoidance, minimization, and compensatory mitigation conserves key habitats at scale.

  • Support Audubon state offices and chapters to become advocates for responsibly sited and operated Transmission projects by engaging early with our expertise and science.

  • Represent Audubon with key partners (internal, external, local, state, federal, public, private) and coalitions focused on clean energy siting and deployment policy – including the ability to prepare and deliver written and/or oral testimony before relevant regulatory agencies.

  • Attend regulatory meetings, legislative proceedings, and relevant MISO events within the territory.

  • Research, write, and edit original reports and issue briefs on Transmission policies.

  • Work closely with Audubon’s communications team to tell the story of Audubon’s on-the-ground Transmission deployment work effectively communicating complex policy issues to non-technical audiences.

  • Using both qualitative and quantitative analysis; make the case for policy interventions.

  • Partner with Audubon staff to ensure that equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging principles are incorporated and followed in all aspects of our work.

  • Qualifications and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree and 7+ years of demonstrated experience in energy siting, grid planning, clean energy development, or conservation policy development that applies to energy projects or related infrastructure on public and private lands. An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.

  • Demonstrated understanding of wildlife conservation issues, including methods for avoiding and mitigating conflicts between clean energy development and wildlife.

  • Exceptional attention to detail, excellent time management, and organizational skills.

  • Experience in project management with a proven track record of successful project completion

  • Demonstrated ability to resolve conflicts creatively and with good science.

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

  • Outstanding policy analysis and research skills.

  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills that can be adapted to reach a wide range of individuals and used to build consensus. Ability to synthesize and communicate technical and complex information to both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Proficiency with use of spatial data platform, preferably ArcGIS

  • A flexible approach to work, willingness to travel up to 10 times per year for project-related work and trainings and possess a valid driver’s license.
