The American Repertory Theater (A.R.T.) at Harvard University is a leading force in the American theater, producing groundbreaking work in Cambridge and beyond. As the professional theater on the campus of Harvard University, A.R.T. is committed to the collaborative and creative exchange among a wide range of academic departments, institutions, students, and faculty members. A.R.T. plays a central role in Harvard’s undergraduate Theater, Dance & Media concentration and also mentors students in the Harvard Radcliffe Dramatic Club at the Loeb Drama Center.

This position supports the Lighting and Projection’s operations and the running of shows for A.R.T.’s production of Gatsby as a swing/on-call crew member, working on a variable schedule basis for 20+ hours per week through strike, load-in, and notes for the following show Romeo & Juliet.


Position Description

Support Artistic Vision and Goals:
  • Works on a variable schedule basis to rotate into Lighting crew positions of Gatsby Followspot, supporting planned and emergency absences for primary crew during the technical rehearsals and performance run.
  • Works as part of the Lighting department as a crew member on pre-rigging, load in, work calls, and strikes.
  • Works as a run crew member on shows, taking cues as assigned by stage management and troubleshooting technical issues in real-time during the run for the Lighting Department.
  • Works with the entire run crew and stage management to make sure the theater and all auxiliary spaces (Green room, etc.) are tidy, safe, and well-kept.

Basic Qualifications

  • An understanding of backstage skills and procedures.
  • General familiarity with stage electrics techniques
  • Knowledge of common knots in theatrical practice and experience tying appropriate knots for rigging
  • Knowledge of backstage workflow and procedures.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with stage management, other technicians, visiting artists and other collaborators with kindness and clarity.
  • Experience running a followspot and/or backstage in a professional environment.

Physical Requirements

  • Able to lift 50 pounds with assistance and be able to stoop, lift, bend, and work in low light conditions.
  • Able to work comfortably at height, on ladders and lifts
  • Ability to sit or stand for hours at a time. Ability to maintain a high degree of focus and concentration in a fast–paced environment. Ability to work in limited space.

Working Conditions

A.R.T. is a multistory building without an elevator, with work taking place on all levels. The Lighting and Stagehand Swing will be asked to move lighting cases and equipment, props, stage ops equipment, and other materials to and from storage or around the building, as well as loading and unloading material from trucks and vans (both at a loading dock and from the street). During load-in and strike, work may take place on ladders, genies, and the steel grating of the grid, 60’ above deck, which is accessed via a 78-step spiral staircase. Constant movement and use of limbs; this position requires good manual dexterity, strength, coordination, and stamina. This position requires night and weekend work, particularly during tech, previews, and run of shows.


Additional Information

This position is subject to periodic unpaid leaves of absence based upon the Production calendar. This position requires occasional overtime and the ability to work some nights and weekends. This position is deemed critical during the production and technical rehearsal period.

This position is based primarily on-campus, in Massachusetts. This may include in-person during emergency situations (if applicable).
