Multicultural Retention Services (MRS) is a unit of the Division of Global Diversity and Inclusion.

MRS strives to ensure the academic success, retention, and graduation of students through culturally inclusive programs and services that are designed to build a strong sense of community and belonging. MRS provides academic support, advising, referrals, and advocacy for first-generation, low-income, and/or historically underrepresented students at PSU :https://www.pdx.edu/multicultural-retention-services/
Position Summary
The role of this position is to develop and lead programs that enhance student success and graduation of Pacific Islander students at Portland State University. A primary focus of this position is on increasing the retention, persistence and successful graduation of Pacific Islander and other first generation, under-represented students through comprehensive support services (i.e. academic advising, advocacy, assistance with the financial aid process and scholarships, general guidance and community building, etc.).

This position is supported by a $2 million federal AANAPISI (Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution) grant. In 2023, Portland State University became the first public institution in Oregon to become an AANAPISI, a designation reserved for institutions of higher education with an undergraduate enrollment of at least 10% Asian American or Pacific Islander. In partnership with the AANAPISI Activities Director, the coordinator will develop, implement, manage and evaluate a cohort of students who participate in a first year retention program that includes peer mentoring, holistic advising, and a college success course. Additionally, this position will develop academic workshops and co-curricular programming designed to support student success and build a strong sense of community for under-represented students. The Coordinator serves as a liaison, advocate and educator for the unique needs, experiences, and challenges faced by Pacific Islander college students.

The professional in this position works collaboratively with the department and other campus units (i.e., The Pacific Islander, Asian & Asian American Student Center & the Native American Student and Community Center) and external organizations to provide services and activities that are sensitive to cultural differences and that promote access and student success.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree and 1-3 years related experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiar with Pacific Islander communities and organizations in Oregon
  • Experience advising and/or supporting with students academically at the post-secondary level
  • Experience facilitating workshops and/or teaching diverse learners at the post-secondary level

The starting annual salary for this position will be $54,684.
