Pay Rate: $21.00-$21.50 based on experience Catholic Charities' Head Start/ Early Head Start programs promote school readiness and family self-sufficiency through holistic services. Catholic Charities of Carrol County is currently seeking a Head Start Bus Driver (CDL), who will be responsible providing daily transportation for the participants of the Program and for the maintenance of the vehicle. Catholic Charities Head Start of Carroll County is a child and family development program targeted to low-income families in Westminster/Union Bridge, for their children to be well prepared when entering kindergarten and thus more successful in school and in life. This will be a PRN/ON-Call position. JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: TRANSPORTING CHILDREN Safely and efficiently transports participants to and from the center daily following established schedule. Always maintains security for passengers, by checking to see that required restraint devices are secured prior to operation of the assigned vehicle. Maintains a system that ensures each child is released to the responsible adult both at home and in the classroom. VEHICLE MAINTENANCE AND RECORDKEEPING Conducts a pre-trip vehicle inspection following established guideline and reports identified problems following established procedures. Maintains the gas tank capacity of the vehicle at one-half full at the end of each day's route. Cleans bus windows, mirrors, and interior, and cleans the exterior of the vehicle weekly. Reports suspected mechanical problems following established procedures. Maintains all other vehicle equipment as required by the Department of Motor Vehicles. Always maintains the inventory of the vehicle's emergency first-aid kit at the required level. Ensures that the vehicle is available for inspection by the Department of Motor Vehicles as scheduled or notified. ADMINISTRATIVE Completes and submits required vehicle and passenger records as scheduled and/or requested. Ensures that all insurance, registration, and passenger information is in the vehicle at all times. Reports all vehicle accidents immediately following the Archdiocese Vehicle Policy Guidelines. Reports all traffic tickets received in the line of work to the immediate supervisor. Maintains confidentiality of all program and participant information. Comply with federal, state, and local guidelines and with the policies and procedures of the Maryland State Office of Child Care, Head Start and Catholic Charities Attend and participate in staff meetings and staff development activities. EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: High School Diploma/GED and one year of experience driving or chauffeuring. Driving (Agency and/or personal vehicle) is required for this position. Driver must be at least 21 years of age, with a minimum of 2 years of driving experience, and a valid driver's license issued by the state of residence. There can be no state issued restrictions on the licenses that would impede driver's ability to operate the vehicle as required by the Agency, and there must not be more than three (3) points on their driving record. o For vehicles over 26,001 lbs. and capacity of more than 15 occupants including the driver (964000): CDL-PS license and minimum of one year experience driving chauffeured vehicles. Must meet age, physical examination and pre-employment drug screening requirements as defined by legislation, Catholic Charities' policies and the Department of Motor Vehicles. Must have or have the ability to become certified by Red Cross in First Aid within three months of employment. Requires the ability to utilize computer systems and software necessary to perform position functions Must also have the ability to lift up to 40 lbs. irregularly. SKILLS / COMPETENCIES: Must have knowledge of basic automotive maintenance and of regulations governing Maryland traffic laws; and the ability to read, compute at a basic level; follow oral and written directions; plan and organize work assignments. Must be able to establish rapport with the public, parents, staff and children; document information; observe children for behavioral changes; practice patience and flexibility with children, parents and staff and program needs. The incumbent is expected to use discretion and to be customer service oriented. The incumbent is further expected to adhere to the rules of traffic safety always placing the welfare of the passengers first; meet performance and behavioral expectations as defined by the supervisor; and to keep the supervisor informed of problems, including but not limited to, schedules, routes, parents' concerns, or failure to adhere to the programs' transportation guidelines; and vehicle maintenance issues.
