Overview

Brief Description:
Department 489 is part of the Integrated Power Systems (IPS) Directorate responsible for developing components for the COLUMBIA Class (CLB) and the SSNX electric drive main propulsion system. D489 rotating machines group is seeking engineers to support SSNX electric drive propulsion development, other related technical areas within the department, and/or to continue development efforts for key CLB IPS electric drive components.

General Description:
Following areas of responsibility:

  • SSNX electric drive technology development : Support development of electric drive technology f`or the next generation attack submarine. The specific components being developed by the group is the main propulsion motor (MPM) and the Turbine generator (TG). This work includes:
    • Supporting design/performance/cost/ship trade studies, performing electrical, magnetic, mechanical, and thermal analysis of key components, interface development, and establishing component requirements.
    • The development and use of next generation electric drive propulsion plant models (Matlab/ Simulink, SABER, etc.) are also needed.
    • This also includes managing component vendor efforts such as developing scoping, review of vendor technical documents, and tracking their performance.
The development effort represents the evolution of the CLB IPS electric drive program through the optimization of existing characteristics, integration of lessons learned, and deployment of advanced features to support the new platforms submarine propulsion system needs.
  • Internal Research and Development (IR&D) : Responsibilities include the design, development, and analysis of the next generation of electric drive propulsion technology and the development of coded models and tools necessary with which to design, analyze, and predict performance in the following areas:
    • Advanced motors, generators, and transformers electric, magnetic, mechanical, and thermal design & analysis
    • Development of EB proprietary Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Matlab/Simulink coded models and tools of technology, components, and systems
    • Scaled prototype development and test of demonstration hardware in a lab environment
Qualifications

Required Education:
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical, Mechanical Engineering, or Physics
  • Candidate must be from organizations outside of operations (Gildart/Gabriel)
Education and Training Required/Desired
Electric or mechanical experience or related education desired in the design, analysis, or test of power electronic systems and electromagnetic machines (motors, generators, transformers). Experience with digital signal processing and non-linear, dynamic analysis a plus. Classes in electromechanical energy conversion and electric machines are preferred. Familiarity with MATLAB/Simulink and/or FEA tools is a benefit and well as coding to help develop new multi-discipline (electrical, magnetic, mechanical, and thermal) technology, component, and system performance models and tools. Strong communication skills and high motivation in a technology design/ development environment are required.
