Position Summary
The Marking and Communications Coordinator is responsible for creating, executing and evaluating marketing and communications strategies and tactics that support Campus Rec’s goals, as well as support the overall wellbeing of the PSU community. The Coordinator will do this though a variety of means including:
  • Marketing inclusive programs, services and environments that promote a healthier campus and foster student success.
  • Providing leadership for the creation, design, production and delivery of all publications, promotional materials, newsletters, website, social media, photo, video and other presentations for CREC.
  • Leading, supervising and training a team of 10–15 student staff responsible for supporting marketing and communication efforts.
  • Ensuring representation for CREC at various sponsored activities among current and prospective Portland State students and community members, including Orientation, New Student Week, Student recruitment activities and Rec Center tours.
  • Playing an integral role in Campus Rec’s strategic plan and student success while serving as an active member of the Portland State Community, including serving on committees and attending events.

The position reports to the Campus Rec Director and is charged with serving as the marketing and communications subject matter expert while working effectively with cross functional teams in the department and university.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization such as marketing, communications, advertising, public relations, health communication or related field plus three years of related professional experience. Experience must include the following:
  • Experience managing key stakeholders/staff and projects while efficiently delivering and distributing projects on time.
  • Collaborative style and strong interpersonal skills that demonstrate the ability to work in teams and build relationships with stakeholders
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including strong editing skills, to communicate with a diverse range of audiences
  • A self-starter with exceptional attention to detail
  • Demonstrated experience working in and creating an inclusive and culturally respectful environment focused on excellent customer service and community building
  • Possess and maintain American Red Cross Adult and Pediatric CPR//FA/AED or obtain one within four weeks of the start date

Ability to work varied hours, including occasional evenings and weekends.

Ability to carry 25 lbs of marketing materials.

Must successfully pass a criminal background check.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in an an appropriate area of specialization such as marketing, communications, advertising, public relation, health communication or related field plus five years related professional experience or Master’s plus three years relevant professional experience.
  • Experience leading a cohesive team
  • Experience mentoring, training and supervising students and/or early career staff
  • Exudes a passion and commitment towards living out the Campus Rec mission and values
  • Exhibits a high degree of professionalism
  • Knowledge of Drupal or other content management systems
  • Competence in use of design software and applications such as: Canva, Photoshop, Illustrator, or InDesign
  • Experience with social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.

Salary is dependent on several factors, and new employees will typically start around the Q1 level to allow for later growth within the salary band. PSU has a structured process for determining starting compensation, taking into account years of related experience, applicable skills, knowledge and abilities, market parity, and internal equity. The starting annual salary for this position will be between $54,684 – $58,152 but may be negotiated above this rate dependent upon the factors above, the budget of the hiring department, and approval from HR.

An excellent benefits package includes 95% employer-paid health insurance premiums (employees and eligible dependents) and significantly reduced tuition rates for employees and eligible dependents at any of the Oregon Public Universities. After completing six full months employees are eligible to choose between our two employer-paid pension programs in addition to two voluntary retirement programs.
