SUMMARY

This position shall be responsible for the inspection process, as applicable to the verification of supplier provided product and/or services; for the product inspection and/or audit of internally manufactured or fabricated goods, subassemblies, and/or finished product; and where applicable, for the generation and retention of all associated documented information. Inspection and release shall be in accordance with well defined criteria using standard physical, mechanical and/or electrical monitoring and measuring equipment, to ensure company specified levels of quality, workmanship and finish.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  1. Thorough knowledge of metal fabrication applications, quality assurance / control practices, and general manufacturing processes and procedures.
  2. Interpret and understand blueprints, drawings, specifications and product to determine conformity to defined requirements.
  3. Have a working knowledge of inspection, monitoring, measuring, and test equipment, to enable the verification of functionality and calibration of the equipment, where needed.
  4. Effectively utilize monitoring, measuring, and test equipment, as applicable to product characteristic verification, to determine conformance to defined criteria.
  5. Maintain a strong attention to detail and the ability to use individual judgment to determine appropriate actions where conformance to defined requirements may be questionable.
  6. Have the ability to provide clear and concise documented information, as it pertains to product or process verification activities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs a variety of inspection tasks including: first article inspection, receiving inspection of purchased components, witness of production tests, equipment calibration, tool and gauge inspection and final product audits.
  • Actively participate in the Merrick internal audit program.
  • Uses drawings, work orders, procedures, and standards to judge if product meets specifications.
  • Perform and/or understand applicable nondestructive examination methods of product using standard industry processes. (VT, RT, UT, MT, PT)
  • Assist / performs supplier source inspections.
  • Accepts or rejects product where inspection / verification activities identify nonconformance.
  • Maintains clear and concise documented information within the quality management system.
  • Act in the capacity of company liaison during customer or third-party inspections.
  • Troubleshoots quality issues, as applicable and verifies correction, as appropriate.
  • Determines and implements appropriate monitoring, measuring or testing methods.
  • Recommends measures for cost-effective process changes to maintain or improve quality.
  • Generates documented information of inspection activities and monitors for nonconformance trends.
  • Verifies appropriate buy-off indicators throughout the manufacturing process.
  • Performs other tasks as instructed, assigned, or as necessary to accomplish quality objectives and support the manufacturing process.
  • Occasional travel will be required.
  • Functions in a workplace of dignity and respect for all.

SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Accountable for all concerns within their scope of work and has the absolute responsibility to remedy, report and/or communicate any issue to managers, supervisors, safety or environmental managers as appropriate.
  • Follows all safe work practices, while watching out for fellow workers.
  • Keeps their work area clean and orderly.
  • Ensures area remains compliant regarding all waste streams. (hazardous waste, non-hazardous waste and universal waste.)
  • The following personal protection equipment is required and must be worn while working in the manufacturing facility or customers' facilities:
  1. Company approved safety glasses or goggles
  2. Company approved steel ESD toe shoes.
  3. Appropriate hand protection.
  4. Ear protection in designated areas.
  5. Appropriate clothing.
  6. Other safety equipment as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or technical school; or a minimum of three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Non-destructive Testing (NDT) certificate preferred.

  • LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as: advanced blueprints, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to interact with customers, vendors, coworkers and supervisory or management personnel clearly and with comprehension.
  • REASONING ABILITY: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Requires heavy interpretation, analysis and judgment in comparing products to specifications, drawings and procedures.
  • MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to calculate basic geometry or trigonometry.
  • COMPUTER AND SOFTWARE SKILLS: Sufficient knowledge to perform basic data entry and communication via memos and e-mail on computers.
  • EQUIPMENT: Micrometer (dial or vernier), caliper, height gauge, surface plate, angle plate, V-blocks, job locks, dial indicator, thread micrometer, tachometer, paint thickness gauge, ultrasonic thickness gauge, pressure gauge, electronic multi-meter, bench grinder, computer and other general office equipment.
  • CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: ASQ Certified Quality Technician or equivalent knowledge level. AWS CWI and NDE preferred.

  • On the occasion when the employee visits a customer site the employee may be exposed to areas that require additional personal safety equipment such as hardhat, hearing protection and respiratory protection.
