The GNU Group is aggressively looking for an experienced

Senior Designer/Planner

to lead the strategy, planning and execution of environmental branding, architectural signage, and wayfinding strategy for our clients. As a Senior Designer/Planner, you will be part of a multi-disciplinary team, leading the strategic planning and user experience for environmental branding, architectural signage, and wayfinding solutions for our clients. This critical position is a strategic leader at GNU Group and is a client-facing problem-solver who can develop strategy, direct design, lead clients, and drive key project deliverables.

A Senior Designer/Planner has the authority, responsibility, and accountability for strategy, user experience, wayfinding methodology and wayfinding masterplans.

While our preference is to have team members based in our Pleasant Hill office, we have adapted to a hybrid workforce and will consider remote positions for a candidate with the right qualifications.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Strategic Planning:

Review work plans during the proposal phase, including project scope, approach, milestones, and key deliverables.

Participate in and lead internal planning sessions and design critiques.

Wayfinding Strategy & User Experience:

Develop comprehensive wayfinding strategies and design user-friendly wayfinding sign programs. Conduct wayfinding assessments, research user group behavior and concerns, identify circulation patterns, organize destinations, establish a hierarchy of information, and determine wayfinding language.

Client & Stakeholder Engagement:

Participate in and lead client reviews and work sessions and collaborate and interface with project stakeholders and partners.

Design Validation:

Iterate studies to evaluate design with the functional needs of the system. Identify functional and aesthetic factors that define design criteria, set operational and compliance parameters, and provide fabrication and installation scenarios.

Design Documentation:

Concept, design, document, and program critical signage and wayfinding components. Review the deliverables of others design documentation to ensure proper integration and alignment into the planning workflow.

Team Communication & Management:

Foster positive project team collaboration and a team culture where creative ideas are encouraged and implemented as appropriate. Communicate with clarity and purpose. Lead by example.

Thought Leadership:

Provide ongoing thought leadership on all projects. Share knowledge and lead training sessions for staff development.

Qualifications:

Bachelors or Masters degree in experiential design, graphic design, industrial design, or related field.

10+ years of experience in wayfinding, environmental branding, and architectural signage.

Ability to plan, document and execute project plans, including scope definition, project strategy, deliverable approach, and team engagement.

Ability to lead project teams and provide project direction.

Organized, with excellent problem-solving, critical thinking, time management, and risk management skills.

Proactive, flexible, team player with the confidence and integrity to earn client and internal team trust quickly.

Ability to adjust to dynamic project situations and respond accordingly.

Ability to read architectural and engineering plans.

Familiar with general contracting/architectural terminology and processes.

Familiar with construction platforms (Autodesk, Build, ProCore, BIM 360, etc.)

Excellent presentation, verbal, written and leadership skills.
