ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Perform the replacement of water meters and meter parts including meter gaskets, curb stops and meter boxes.Inspect meters for water leaks; repair meter leaks.Inspect, maintain, repair, test and service commercial and residential water meters; check for low water pressure conditions; overhaul water meters as required; inspect new meter settings.Install and discontinue water services.Inspect newly installed water meters to ensure safe and satisfactory functioning.Provide water utility customer services including re-reading meters and assisting customers with meter problems and collect past due water bills for commercial only. Educate customers on the water usage program (WaterSmart).Operate a variety of tools and equipment including trucks, hand-held computers, torches and hand tools; perform general maintenance duties including refueling and making minor adjustments as necessary.Read commercial water meters using computerized meter reading equipment; make necessary calculations. Install and repair radio read meters.Work on call duty as needed.Keep accurate maintenance records. MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTSEDUCATIONHigh School Diploma or GED.EXPERIENCEFor external applicants:One (1) year of experience involving the maintenance and repair of plumbing, meter reading equipment or other related equipment.For internal promotions:Three (3) months of experience working in the Maintenance Worker II Utilities classification, Meter Reader classification or other relevant City classification involving the maintenance and repair of plumbing, meter reading equipment or other related equipment.LICENSES AND CERTIFICATESPossession of a valid driver's license.Obtain a Class "C" Distribution certification from Texas Commission on Environmental Quality within one year of successful completion of probationary period, if hired after January 1, 2003. Failure to obtain certification will result in non-disciplinary termination.WORK SCHEDULEMonday - Friday; 7AM-3:30PMShift will rotate on-call duties and some overtime as needed.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / WORK ENVIRONMENTFull Time Employees:The City of Mesquite offers the Zero Premium, Employee Only Benefits under the following plans: High Deductible Medical Plan, HMO Dental Plan, Vision Plan, and Life Insurance. Basic Group Life Insurance protection is provided to eligible full-time employees in the amount of two times the annual salary as recorded at the beginning of each year. The following voluntary benefits are available to full-time employees: Supplemental Life, AD&D Insurance, Cancer Insurance and Long-Term DisabilityTexas Municipal Retirement System (TMRS): All employees appointed to positions designated to work 1,000 hours or more per year must participate in the TMRS. TMRS is a qualified tax-deferred retirement plan under Section 401 of the IRS. Seven (7) percent of gross earnings are deducted each payroll as a pre-tax deduction and deposited into the member account.
