The Perioperative Surgical Assistant team is seeking a full-time, experienced Surgical First Assistant to support the Operating Rooms at Inova Fairfax Medical Campus. This unit oversees surgical services for our Level 1 Trauma Center, Women's OR, PSB Surgery Center, and Woodburn Surgery Center. Our teammates demonstrate high personal accountability, resilience, teamwork, and continuous learning; we are looking for eager and adaptive personalities to join our team!

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Provides safe therapeutic care by collaboration with surgeons and health care team in performing a safe operation with optimal outcomes for the patient. Must have acquired the necessary knowledge, skills, and judgment specific to clinical practice.

Teamwork - Communicates effectively and works cooperatively with others. Has respect for and understanding of other clinical disciplines. Uses an integrated approach toward patient outcomes.
Quality/Best Practice - Utilizes standards, guidelines, and pathways for care delivery. Incorporates data and information to continuously improve care and practice to enhance outcomes.
Professional Development - Ensures improvements in practice settings by assuming responsibility for self-development in life-long learning. Provides direction and guidance to others regarding practice. Serves as a resource preceptor and mentor. Demonstrates leadership skills in decision-making and problem-solving.

  • Experience: Minimum of 1 year of experience as a Surgical First Assistant or 2 years of Surgical Technologist experience
    • Preferred experience in Robotics, Ortho, Spine, and Vascular.
  • Education and Licensure: Must meet licensure criteria and be licensed as Surgical Assistant in the Commonwealth of Virginia at time of hire
  • Certification: BLS via American Heart Association
  • Special Skills: Ability to communicate effectively in English. Ability to work routinely without direct supervision. Ability to demonstrate good judgment in daily activities. Ability to understand and implement infection control and hospital safety practices.
  • A current credential as a surgical assistant or surgical first assistant issued by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA), or the National Commission for Certification of Surgical Assistants (NCCSA) or their successors
