Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
Dr. Sheena Erete and Dr. Vanessa Frias Martinez are recruiting a postdoctoral researcher who will join a collaborative
NSF -funded research to work on the design, development, and evaluation of civic technologies for economically disadvantaged and marginalized communities in Baltimore City and Prince George’s County.
Responsibilities:
The postdoctoral researcher will have the opportunity to conduct research and scholarship to (1) design tech tools that allow communities to identify and overcome access barriers in their transportation and food systems; (2) identify the processes that allow communities to conduct data-mediated conversations with key stakeholders to improve the quality of the transportation and food systems in their communities, and (3) evaluate the effect of the use of tech tools in improving access to and quality of transportation and food systems in their communities, while controlling for potential societal harms.
The postdoctoral researcher will also be able to co-mentor graduate and undergraduate students working in the
NSF -funded research.
The salary is $80K per year, plus competitive benefits. The duration is one year with the possibility to extend to a second year.
The postdoctoral researcher will be located at the University of Maryland, a top public research university located outside Washington, D.C., in College Park, Maryland. The researcher will be able to interact with other postdocs at the Values-Centered AI Initiative ( VCAI ), Community Research, Equity, and Design Lab (CReED), and the Human-Computer Interaction Lab ( HCIL ). An important requirement of this position is that the postdoctoral student should be willing and able to visit communities in and around Baltimore City and Prince George’s County to carry out focus groups, interviews and meetings that will inform research.
Ph.D. completed or to be completed by August 2024 (with some flexibility).
Experience:
Demonstrated research capacity in information science or related fields.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Preferences:
Preferences:
Research expertise in human-computer interaction, social informatics and/or civic tech.
Proficiency and experience with research methods, such as participatory design (PD), community-based participatory research ( CBPR ), and assets-based design ( ABD ).
Experience conducting qualitative studies such as focus groups, interviews, and surveys as well as using thematic data analysis techniques and basic statistical analysis.
Candidates must also have experience working within marginalized communities and be willing to engage community residents and organizations in meaningful, yet thoughtful and responsible, ways.
