Department Information
Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE) at the Georgia Institute of Technology is one of the largest producers of electrical engineers and computer engineers in the United States. Almost 2,600 students are enrolled in the Schools graduate and undergraduate programs, and in the last academic year, 801 degrees were awarded. All ECE undergraduate and graduate programs are in the top five of the most recent college rankings by U.S. News & World Report.

In addition to the main campus in Atlanta, Georgia, ECE also has permanent operations at Georgia Tech-Lorraine in France and Georgia Tech-Shenzhen in China. Graduate students who spend at least one semester each at three Georgia Tech locations (Atlanta, Lorraine, and Shenzhen on three continents: North America, Europe, and Asia) can earn the Georgia Tech Global Engineering Immersion Program (GEIP) Certificate when they receive the Georgia Tech M.S. degree.

Over 110 ECE faculty members are involved in 11 areas of research and education bio engineering, computer systems and software, digital signal processing, electrical energy, electromagnetic, electronic design and applications, nanotechnology, optics and pho tonics, systems and controls, telecommunications, and VLSI systems and digital design and the School is either home to or a key player in almost 20 research centers and consortia.

Job Summary

Supervise operations of an instructional or research laboratory. Activities include instruction in lab procedures and safety, development of lab procedures and processes, conducting experiments, budgeting and purchasing, equipment and inventory maintenance and maintaining records. Responsible for setting employee goals, assessing performance and providing feedback and making pay recommendations. This position will interact on a consistent basis with: academic and/or research faculty members, staff and students, laboratory staff, vendor/suppliers. This position typically will advise and counsel: lab users, students and technicians, student assistants. This position will supervise: laboratory technical staff.

Responsibilities

Job Duty 1 -
Instruct lab users on proper use of equipment, lab safety, protocols and procedures related to conducting experiments

Job Duty 2 -
Develop and administer laboratory budget; oversee purchase of supplies and equipment and maintain related records

Job Duty 3 -
Supervise operation of laboratory facility in safe, clean and organized manner

Job Duty 4 -
Oversee scheduling of lab usage

Job Duty 5 -
Develop and implement laboratory policy and procedures; incorporate best practices as appropriate

Job Duty 6 -
Oversee calibration and maintenance of lab equipment

Job Duty 7 -
Plan and direct work of subordinate staff and assess performance

Job Duty 8 -
Perform other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

Educational Requirements
Bachelor's Degree in scientific field or equivalent combination of education and experience

Other Required Qualifications
Overnight travel required for project delivery; flexibility in on-site daily service delivery hours (due to client shift schedules, project requirements).

Required Experience
Six to seven years of job related experience

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

SKILLS
This job requires working knowledge of instructional or research laboratory operation to include equipment calibration and maintenance, laboratory processes and procedures and lab safety rules and practices. Skills in communication, customer service, supervision and instruction are required as is the use of specialty and general computer applications.

Salary range: $84,035.00 - $114,288.00

Other Information
  • Manage a large budget ($250k+ per year) and associated purchasing and bookkeeping records.
  • Supervise undergraduate and graduate student assistants, supporting instruction in a wide range of classes: circuits, electromagnetics, telecommunications, optics, etc.
  • Instruct students in the use of tools, use of manufacturing equipment, design and implementation of circuits and electrical test equipment such as oscilloscopes, meters, network analyzers, logic analyzers, etc.
  • Use machine tools, 3D printers, laser cutters, etc. to implement mechanical and electrical projects
