Job Summary

Due to a robust and highly successful research enterprise at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFG), the Department of Medicine is recruiting a new Research Administrator (RA) to join our team.

The incumbent will use their skills as an engaged research administrator to independently manage awards and transactions related to contract and grant management for a portfolio of Principal Investigators (PI) across the Department. The incumbent is responsible for complex analysis and coordination of the financial aspects of grants management to ensure proper stewardship of awarded funds in compliance with sponsor, federal, state, and University regulations.

The portfolio may include multiple-PI awards, program project grants, and awards with multiple subcontracts to domestic and/or foreign institutions. Candidates must have experience analyzing revenue and expenses against budgets, developing projections, and producing financial reports to manage projects strategically and in compliance with all applicable guidelines.

A successful Research Administrator (RA) has great communication and financial research administration skills who demonstrates adaptability and autonomy in planning, budgeting, problem solving, and keeping detailed records of financial transactions.

The RA is the faculty's primary partner for research financial issues, and ensures that faculty are provided with accurate, high quality, efficient, responsive, and dependable post-award research administration services with minimal oversight[AO1] .

Research Administrators are an integral part of the team and serve as a resource to Principal Investigators, Division Managers, and other departmental personnel in interpreting University and sponsor policies and procedures within the financial component of research administration.

The incumbent will work with a team of 10 RA's on the Central Administration RA Team and will interact closely with a diverse and engaging group of mission-driven colleagues across the Department, and therefore needs to possess excellent communication skills and a commitment to providing exceptional customer service.

Department Description

Since 1864, the UCSF School of Medicine and Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG) have worked in close collaboration to provide health care services for the people of San Francisco, under the umbrella of the San Francisco Department of Public Health.

The Department of Medicine is the largest department at Zuckerberg San Francisco General with an annual budget of over $191 million. The Department is divided into 13 Divisions and 5 Centers made up of approximately 200 faculty and 535 staff and trainees.

The Department of Medicine's mission at ZSFG is bold and noble.

We strive to ensure that all patients have access to and receive the best care possible, while integrating UCSF education and research with ZSFG clinical programs. To that end, we provide quality and culturally appropriate healthcare services to vulnerable populations, including the uninsured, homeless, children, elderly, low income, and racial and ethnic minorities. We also maintain a thriving research program and a national-renowned academic program.

The Department at ZSFG has a dedicated team of Research Administrators (RAs) who are responsible for providing high-level financial analyses and management to a defined group of Faculty for their portfolio of sponsored awards. Research from bench to bedside to populations continues to expand annually, and the Department at ZSFG leads the way in research in infectious diseases, chronic diseases, cancer, and other conditions. Themes across divisions include disparities and health equity, prevention, social and environmental exposures, health care delivery, disease mechanisms, methods, and interventions.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, economics, business or related area and three or more years equivalent experience and / training in a financial management Ability to manage significant volume of transactions. Ability to perform complex financial analysis and customized reporting. Ability to work well and communicate with others in a team oriented environment Excellent computer skills and facility with using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and Outlook).

Must be able to adapt to and learn new University financial/accounting systems Understand general fund accounting, purchasing, and budgeting, financial projection and business planning concepts Demonstrated competence in the use of spreadsheet and database software in financial analysis, fiscal management and financial reports. Independent judgment and strong organization and communication skills and customer service focus across broad and diverse subject areas. Excellent time management skills and attention to detail Demonstrated knowledge of generally accepted accounting, fiscal and reporting principles.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous working experience in an academic environment Thorough understanding of research administration guidelines of Federal and non-Federal sponsors supporting research and educational activities, preferably in a university environment. Maintains current knowledge of compliance regulations in all areas of research administration.
