Renders general and specialized nursing care to inmate patients in a Correctional Facility. Administers prescribed medications and treatments in accordance with approved nursing techniques to promote the physical and mental health of the inmate population. Ensures functions under charge are performed in compliance with all federal, state and local rules, policies and other regulatory standards applicable to the work.

Essential Job Functions

  • Performs nursing services, such as obtaining vital signs, wound care, IV therapy, collecting blood, urine, sputum and stool specimens, respond to emergencies in the Facility, and performing assessments to insure needs are met in accordance with clinical guidelines, as well as duties imposed by the State and Federal laws and regulations and OCCD administrative procedures.
  • Provides first aid for injuries and acute illness; reports any health-related issues and/or concerns.
  • Initiates prompt referral to the appropriate medical facility when more extensive treatment is warranted.
  • Administers and documents all medications as directed by medication records.
  • Order medications and supplies from the pharmacy and suppliers.
  • Reads, maintains, updates and files various medical logs, databases and records; compiles data from patient medical records, e.g., illness/injury logs, medication administration, physical exams, treatments, specimens collected and sent for processing.
  • Verify all orders from the medical records were properly transposed to the orders/tasks within the electronic medical record and medication administration record. Maintain electronic medical record files on all inmates. File all necessary medical reports in the patient's medical record.
  • Performs duties as assigned/necessary which are related, or logical in assignment to the position.
Minimum Qualifications

Education: Associates Degree in Nursing or related field from an accredited college or university.

Certifications/Licenses:
  • Must be licensed as a Registered Nurse in the state of Florida.
  • Must possess and maintain hands on, in-person (classroom) CPR Certification from American Heart Association (AHA), American Red Cross (ARC), or American Safety and Health Institute (ASHI). Online only or eLearning CPR Certification will not be considered.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to clearly communicate information both verbally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of all applicable medical treatments and common medications administered within a corrections facility.
  • Knowledge of pertinent federal, state and local rules, regulations, ordinances, and other regulatory standards applicable to the work.
  • Ability to access, operate and maintain various software applications; ability to read, update and maintain various records and files.
  • Ability to operate basic office equipment, e.g., computer terminals, printers, copy machines, telephone systems, facsimile machines.
  • Ability to work independently to carry out assignments to completion.
  • Ability to perform duties with a professional and cooperative work ethic; ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with inmates, health and corrections professionals.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and cordially with a variety of people from different cultural backgrounds; ability to deal with people in a variety of changing and complex situations.
  • Ability to work under stressful conditions.
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, or climb stairs for extended periods of time.
PHYSICAL DEMAND REQUIREMENTS:
  • Physical Demand: Medium
  • 50 pounds maximum lifting.
  • Frequent (up to 2/3 of the work time) lifting, carrying up to 10 lbs.

Medical Health Reimbursement Account (HRA): The County contributes $500 per employee or $1,000 for employee plus dependents, for medical and prescription-related expenses.

State-of-the-Art Employee Wellness Center: The County provides a private health center for County Employees and eligible dependents. The Employee Wellness Center offers an array of primary care services, including sick visits, enhanced by x-ray services, pulmonary tests, lab work, and a dispensary offering over 200 generic medications onsite. Services at the Wellness Center are offered at no cost to the employees and their eligible dependents.
  • Employees who are enrolled on the County's Medical plan have access to the Employee Wellness Center on day one of employment. The Wellness Center is available to patients 8 years of age and older.
Basic Life Insurance Policy: At no cost to the employee, equal to one time the employee's annual salary, rounded to the next thousand dollars. Employees can opt to buy additional Life Insurance.

Short-Term and Long-Term Disability: At no cost to the employee. The County offers Short-Term and Long-Term Disability at 60% of the employee's weekly base salary. The employee has the option to purchase an additional 10% coverage.

Membership in the Florida Retirement System: This benefit cannot be easily matched by a traditional 401k plan. Current County contributions are:

The Florida Retirement System (FRS) offers two retirement plans - the Investment Plan and the Pension Plan. Both plans are subject to a mandatory 3% employee contribution.
