Job Summary and Qualifications

The Surgical Technologist (CST), under the direction and supervision of the RN, and Surgical Services Manager, assists in the performance of a variety of both invasive and noninvasive operative procedures. Technical responsibilities include functioning in the role of Surgical Technologist for surgical procedures, and the knowledge of aseptic technique needed to carry out the procedure. The CST maintains surgical equipment in good working order and maintains adequate stocking of surgical supplies and related equipment. Other responsibilities include, maintaining appropriate aseptic technique in cleaning the rooms and/or necessary supplies.

This is a highly visible role with a large degree of physician as well as patient interaction so it is important that the CST strives to promote harmony of unit.

The CST handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. He/she has an understanding of the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon.

What you will do in this role:

  • Check supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedure.
  • Set up sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment and medications/solutions needed for procedure.
  • Perform appropriate counts with circulator prior to the operation and before incision is closed.
  • Gown and glove surgeon and assistants
  • Help in draping sterile field and pass instruments, etc., to surgeon during procedure
  • Prepare sterile dressings and clean and prepare instruments for terminal sterilization
  • Assist other members of team with terminal cleaning of room and prepping room for next patients

What qualifications you will need:

  • Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
  • Certified Surgical Technician (CST)
  • Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technologist program
  • Minimum of 1 year experience is preferred
