Summary:

The Pharmacy Technician is an entry-level position. Following a training period, the Technician should be able to decipher and enter orders on the computer, compound IVs, charge and credit, fill orders, answer phones and doors, and stock the department.

Responsibilities:

(20%)* Runs reports, pulls medications and restocks Automated Dispensing Machines, follows up on narcotic discrepancies, trouble-shoots problems, aides and trains nurses on dispensing problems.

(20%)* Performs sterile compounding per USP 797 guidelines and non-sterile compounding per USP 795 guidelines. Universal precautions to be utilized when compounding or otherwise manipulating biologic products. Performs daily, monthly, and ad hoc cleaning/disinfection of designated IV room areas using MyMichigan-approved cleaning solutions.

(15%)* Run labels using the computer in an accurate and timely manner.

(15%)* Fills, reconciles and exchanges 24 hour UD medicine carts using McKesson robot and EPIC.

(15%)* Repackages non-unit dose medications correctly using PacMed and McKesson repackager.

(15%)* Replaces and fills floor stock: fills Emergency Medical Services (EMS) boxes, crash cart trays, open heart medications and Omnicell Anesthesia carts and delivers to appropriate area; completes monthly floor stock on other medical center departments; stocks UD area and IV room if needed.

Certifications and Licensures:
  • PHARM TECH - Pharmacy Technician Licensure Required
    • Equivalent Experience - New hire and transfers before October 1, 2015 must possess a full technician license or limited pharmacy license through the state of Michigan. Effective October 1, 2015, all incumbents, new hires and transfers to this position must possess a pharmacy technician temporary, limited or full license through the state of Michigan Individuals with a temporary license must obtain a full license through the state of Michigan within 365 days of obtaining the temporary license. A Pharmacist Intern License with the State of MI is also acceptable


Required Education:

High School Diploma or GED

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Compounds oral and topical solutions and ointments.

Answers phone, retrieves tubes and faxes. Helps with duties as directed by the pharmacist on duty.

Able to add barcodes to products, including compounded items, Intravenous Piggy-Back (IVPBs), etc using the MILT 3.0 program, and using PharmNet Inpatient Formulary Manager to check National Drug Codes (NDC) numbers and barcodes.

Other duties as assigned.
