Position Description

TITLE: Bus Driver REPORTS TO: Transportation Supervisor

CLASSIFICATION: Classified WORK YEAR: School Year

BOARD APPROVAL: SALARY: Classified Salary Schedule

Basic Function: Under general supervision, to operate a school bus or transportation vehicle over designated routes within an established time schedule; to transport students to and from school and on special event and athletic event trips; to perform daily inspections of a bus or transportation equipment; and to do other related work as required. This position is evaluated by the Transportation Supervisor.

Representative Duties: Other duties may be assigned

  • Drives a school bus or transportation vehicle over assigned routes in accordance with an established time schedule.
  • Assists in evaluating transportation routes, and reports unsafe road conditions.
  • Complies with local traffic regulation. Reports delays or accidents.
  • Transports children to and from school
  • Loads and unloads students safely at designated stops and on field trips or athletic event trips.
  • Inspects bus and checks gas, oil, and water before departure. Sweeps, cleans and refuels buses.
  • Stops traffic and escorts children across streets.
  • Plans, organizes and implements student safety and pupil transportation vehicle evacuation drills.
  • Maintains bus or transportation vehicle in a clean and orderly condition, and inspects and reports any mechanical defects or malfunctions.
  • Adheres to policies and procedures in maintaining appropriate student behavior.
  • Responds to public contacts concerning transportation problems and concerns.
  • Completes the daily transportation activity record, including number of students transported, mileage, type of trip, and standby time.
  • May transport children with special learning needs and physical handicaps.
  • Administers first aid as required, and contacts appropriate administrators in case of serious injury or illness.

Education and/or Experience

One-year certificate from college or technical school; or three to six months related experience and /or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Possession of a valid Class A or B with endorsement, California Motor Vehicle Operator's License; Possession of a School Bus Driver's Certificate issued by the California Highway Patrol, including passage of a first aid examination, Medical Examiners Certificate (DL-51, F.A.A. or F.H.A.). Insurability by the District's liability insurance carrier. Participation in the district's federally mandated drug and alcohol testing program.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Must see well enough to read standard print and maps; hear well enough to participate in normal and in-person and telephone conversations; speak in an understandable voice with sufficient volume to be heard in normal conversation or on the telephone. Sufficient strength to lift non ambulatory students, lift and move equipment, physically control/restrain a 100 pound student with assistance. Sufficient mobility to climb in and out of school buses and emergency exits and to maneuver students into and out of buses.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to:
  • Lifting/Carrying: Drivers, under emergency conditions, have to be able to lift, drag or carry students weighing up to 100 lbs. on/off the vehicle. Occasionally, drivers lift 30 to 50 pound students in assisting them in entering the vehicle.
  • Push/Pull: Done continuously while performing safety inspections; intermittently while assisting students on/off the vehicle.
  • Bend/Stooping: Done continuously while performing safety inspections; intermittently while assisting students on/off the vehicle.
  • Walk/Stand Continuo0us while not driving.
  • Reach/Handle/Finger: Continuous throughout the workday.
  • Use Foot Controls: Continuous while driving.
  • Sitting: Continuous while driving. As required to perform the duties of a bus driver, must be able to sit for long periods of time.
Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, outside weather conditions, extreme cold, and extreme heat. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
