We are currently looking for individuals to fill the following Summer Camp position at Camp La Jita. La Jita, meaning “precious possession”, was aptly chosen as the name for our resident camp on the beautiful Sabinal River near Utopia, Texas. Camp La Jita rests on 236 acres of Texas Hill Country land, one hour and twenty minutes west of San Antonio.

 

Residential Camp Nurse (Reports to Camp Director)

 

Position Purpose: The Residential Camp Nurse is responsible for overseeing the health and safety of campers and staff.

Responsibilities:
Confers with camp physician on Standing Orders and procedures to follow for the camp’s duration.

Prepares requisitions for necessary supplies.

Cares for the physical well-being of everyone in camp. Takes care of all cases of illness and accident of campers and staff, under the direction of the camp physician.

Checks each incoming camper individually upon arrival at camp. Checks individual health forms of incoming campers and staff; follows up on any pertinent information with the individual and the staff member responsible.

Maintains the Health Center and notifies Camp Director immediately of all cases of illness or injury.

Keeps health records and records all treatments in a binder. Maintains other health information, including insurance claims. 

Maintains first aid equipment for units, waterfront, kitchen, horseback riding areas, vehicles, and other key locations.

Assists the Camp Director and Assistant Director in maintaining proper sanitation and safety throughout the camp, including kitchen and dining hall.

Does a daily inspection of each unit, including kitchen, staff quarters and all staff areas.

Inventories all medical supplies at the end of the camp season, properly disposing of items that cannot be kept through the winter and packing the remaining items for storage.

Prepares records for office files, including health forms for all campers and staff, inventories, daily treatment sheets, individual health records, and accident and illness insurance forms.

Is responsible for cleanliness of the health center and for laundry.

Transports any ill or injured person to the doctor or the hospital when needed.

Acts as a host/hostess for camp visitors and parents.

Attends administrative and weekly staff meetings.

Participates in all camp activities.

Is familiar with and implements all ACA guidelines for health services.

Follows and adheres to National and Council policies, procedures, and plans.

Operates according to ACCT standards and local operational procedures. 

Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications:
Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Registered Nurse (RN) or License Practical Nurse (LPN), with a license as required by the state of Texas. 

CPR certified.

Current First Aid certification and experience in first aid and emergency management.

Requirements:

Valid driver’s license and successful completion of a criminal background check.

Reliable transportation required.

Experience in both child and adult illness/injury care.

Desire to work with children and young adults.

Community health knowledge.

Must be available to stay at camp July 7 – July 26, 2024, from 10:00 am Sunday morning until 6:00 pm the following Friday evening. 

Staff may stay on camp property over the weekend if necessary.

Ability to communicate with parents, staff, and administration about camper health concerns.

Possess endurance to meet emergency needs.

Ability to drive to off-camp health provider, physician, or emergency treatment locations.

Willingness to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours delivering medical care in the facility available.

Work Environment

Work daily with exposure to the sun and heat.

Compensation: $702 per week (plus meals and housing included)
