Overview

  • This position is open until filled with an initial application review to take place after May 27, 2024.
  • The pay rate for this position is $26 -$35 per hour.
  • The incumbent must reside a commutable distance from the Fresno region upon hire.

Prison Arts Collective (PAC) works to expand access to the transformative power of the arts

through collaboration and mutual learning that supports the development of self-expression,

reflection, communication, and empathy through providing multidisciplinary arts programming in

correctional institutions. PAC currently facilitates weekly multidisciplinary arts programming and

art facilitator training (AFT) programs in 12 prisons throughout California. PAC is based at San

Diego State University and has partnerships with California Polytechnic University in Humboldt

and California State University, San Bernardino.



Responsibilities

Teaching & Mentoring 75%

  • Conduct monthly mentor visits with peer facilitators at correctional institutions in the Fresno region (currently PAC has peer facilitators on three yards at Avenal State Prison and on one yard at Central California Women’s Facility) to support peer facilitators.
  • Collaborate with participants and peer facilitators to create a calm, focused, positive, and supportive learning environment for all.
  • Lead certificate ceremonies for program participants following the end of each program session.
  • Develop and organize program materials, track program attendance, and collaborate with members of the teaching team, including other Teaching Artists, incarcerated peer facilitators, and volunteers, to ensure smooth implementation of classes.
  • Collaborate with Community Resource Managers and correctional staff at partner sites and with PAC team to share ideas and contribute to discussions; help innovate solutions to programmatic questions
  • Potential to lead mural and other short term arts workshops in the region
  • Cultivate connections and organize a local event for participants in or out of the prison to share artwork and build community

Administration 20%

  • Attend and participate in monthly regional lead meetings to share successes, challenges, and recommendations for improvements to the program.
  • Coordinate logistics for printing/delivering packets and purchasing materials for participants as needed.
  • Provide regular and clear updates on the Arts Facilitator Training program to the Executive Director and administrative analyst.
  • Complete monthly data reports including instruction hours, attendance numbers, and narrative reflections and provide accurate and timely program information to the budget officer for grant reporting.
  • Maintain clearance at correctional partner sites and attend in-person and online CDCR volunteer and PAC training.
  • Maintain clear records of supplies, attendance, and provide feedback to incarcerated peer facilitators.
  • Identify program supply needs and submit supply requests to the administrative analyst.
  • Distribute surveys to participants at the beginning and end of each session, and share these with PAC headquarters.

Other duties as assigned 5%

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Studio Art, Art Education, or Art History. MFA preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and ability to collaborate with a team
  • Desired qualities: creative problem solver, empathetic, detail oriented, responsive, dedicate to PAC mission
  • Practicing and/or experienced artists preferred
  • At least four years experience teaching total. Ideal candidate will have experience teaching in corrections.
  • Experience with PAC or another AIC organization is preferred but not required.
  • Candidates with lived experience with the justice system will be carefully considered.

Additional Requirements

  • Candidates must reside in the Fresno region at time of hire
  • Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance of SDSU background check (including criminal record check)
  • Must successfully complete the California Department of Corrections Background investigation.

Salary

This will be a part-time position consisting of 20 hours per month, or roughly 5 hours per week depending on the programming schedule. Teaching Artists earn $26 - $35 per hour based on experience.

Duration and Location

The PAC Teaching Artist position is a one-year term with the possibility of continuing for a second one-year term based on program needs and candidate interest and performance. PAC Teaching Artists serve as part of the core team but are based in one of PAC’s chapters with the

expectation of supporting programming in that region. This opportunity is for a teaching role in the Fresno area.The teaching artist will work with the staff coordinator and will report to the PAC Program Coordinator based out of San Diego State University. The position will also require travel to PAC meetings at the San Diego Campus and may include program visits and teaching at distant sites
