Essential Functions

These are the job duties required of the position.

Essential Functions
  • Oversees new lab startups by coordinating deliveries of lab supplies and equipment, and orienting new researchers.
  • Oversees lab closeouts to ensure that laboratory chemicals and supplies are disposed of or relocated in accordance with procedures set by the Safety & Environmental Compliance and Property Management departments, including surplus or obsolete equipment.
  • Serves as the Building Safety Coordinator at the Mitchell Cancer Institute (MCI).
  • Ensures that research operations are conducted in compliance with regulatory policies, including those for lab and chemical safety, radiation and laser safety, IBC, and OSHA.
  • Conducts informal inspections as needed.
  • Accompanies IBC inspectors during their reviews of laboratories.
  • Serves as point-of-contact at the MCI for the Department of Safety and Environmental Compliance.
  • Ensures that up-to-date chemical inventories are provided by investigators to the Department of Safety and Environmental Compliance (SEC) annually.
  • Arranges pick up of accumulated chemical waste.
  • Oversees property control by ensuring that new equipment is tagged, conducting annual inventory checks and submitting property control forms.
  • Submits requests for building maintenance.
  • Monitors common lab equipment for optimal performance, assists in trouble shooting, renews service contracts (as applicable) and schedules preventative maintenance.
  • Monitors tissue culture and fume hoods at the MCI for correct functioning and arrange repair or replacement as needed.
  • Assists investigators with getting POs for purchases over $5,000 and organizes legal review for quotes with Terms and Conditions.
  • Liaises with Environmental Services and Stericycle for disposal of biohazardous waste.
  • Oversees ordering, delivery and storage of liquid nitrogen at the MCI.
  • Inspects cryosafes on a daily basis to ensure adequate nitrogen levels.
  • Monitors, maintains, and orders dry ice for the research laboratories and the Clinical Trials Office
  • Orders gases for labs as required.
  • Regular and prompt attendance.
  • Ability to work schedule as defined and additional hours as required.
  • Related duties as required.
