The Lead Medical Technologist performs and evaluates complex laboratory tests in various areas of the clinical laboratory. The position requires understanding and operating manual techniques, complex precision instruments and a variety of automated/electronic equipment. The Lead Medical Technologist acts as a technical resource for Medical, Nursing and Laboratory staff. They have the necessary background to recognize problems, be proficient in troubleshooting, problem solving, and have a thorough understanding of Clinical Laboratory Science and Quality Control procedures. They may be key operators for various instruments, directly involved in writing SOP's, training, advanced maintenance procedures, troubleshooting, QC evaluation and documentation.

They assist in developing and modifying procedures and programs to ensure test accuracy. Lead Medical Technologists help to develop and achieve short/long term section goals and objectives. They are involved in implementing and following guidelines for compliance with accrediting agencies such as CAP, AABB and TJC. They are involved with Quality Assurance and Improvement procedures in their area. Assist with overseeing daily operations of their area, delegating work and making schedule changes as needed. They review data daily and weekly, reporting problems to a supervisor as necessary in a timely manner. They attend and/or participate in appropriate hospital and departmental meetings, committees, and programs. Provides orientation to residents, new employees, and current employees on new procedures on a timely basis. Assumes all the responsibilities of a supervisor in their absence and may perform additional duties as required or assigned.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Specific Duties and Responsibilitie

1. PATIENT SAFETY

Follows established hospital and departmental precautions and procedures when

performing job duties to ensure a safe work environment for patients and others:

•Demonstrates appropriate hand hygiene

•Demonstrates use of two patient identifier

•Demonstrates effective communication; "hand offs" between providers, shifts,

departments, etc.

•Demonstrates use of proper precautions including use of appropriate personal protective equipment

2. TESTING

Accurately performs and expeditiously reports laboratory tests according to Standard

Operating Procedures. Responds to stat orders and assists others with workload

fluctuations. Reports critical values in accordance with laboratory policy.

3. QUALITY CONTROL

Consistently performs quality control procedures and appropriate instrument check

including equipment maintenance and repairs. Reviews, takes appropriate action, and

documents according to Standard Operating Procedures.

4. TRAINING/EDUCATION

Responsible for continuing education and competency assessment. Participates in

laboratory quality assurance program including QA/QI, proficiency testing and procedure

review (new and annual).

5. PROFESSIONAL EXPECTATIONS

Anticipates needs and is proactive in performing tasks related to departmental

operations without supervision. Assists others to achieve overall departmental

productivity and efficiency; complete additional tasks as assigned.

Qualifications

EDUCATION:

Bachelor's Degree in physical, biological, or chemical science r.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or REGISTRATIONS equired

•Must be CLIA eligible for High Complexity Testing

•MT(ASCP) or equivalent preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

5 years of work experience in a hospital laboratory
