Responsible for the proper performance of a variety of clinical laboratory procedures, consistent with professional standards and departmental protocol, policies and procedures. a. Performs appropriate start-up procedures at the beginning of each shift. b. Promptly and accurately performs assigned procedures and conducts routine quality control, calibrations and instrument checks. Takes appropriate follow-up action, if required. c. Ensures that test results correlate properly and takes appropriate follow-up action for all incompatible results. d. Ensures the proper working order of all equipment and that there are adequate supplies and reagents for use. e. Processes specimens as outlined in Specimen Collection manual f. Operates and maintains instrumentation. Fills out all maintenance, daily temperature and other logs g. Documents quality control results properly, documents corrective action when control results fall outside of established range. h. Communicates critical results to appropriate personnel in a timely manner i. Accurately performs microscopy procedures; white blood cell differential examinations and urine sediments. j. If assigned, Performs testing accurately and completely following Policies & Procedures in the Blood Bank k. If assigned, Performs testing accurately and completely following Policies & Procedures in the Chemistry Section l. Creates packing lists for send-out bench. m. If assigned, Performs testing accurately and completely following Policies & Procedures in the Hematology & Coagulation Sections n. If assigned, Performs testing accurately and completely following Policies & Procedures in the Urinalysis & Microbiology Sections o. Proficient using all Epic routines required for Specimen Collection, Site Batching and Technical Workload. p. Performs Phlebotomy, as needed, and other Specimen Collection procedures q. Participates in proficiency testing for assigned clinical areas. r. Reviews Safety, Infection Control, Human Resources and OSHA policies and appropriate Laboratory Manuals. s. Participates in performance improvement projects, Gemba board and idea board as appropriate. t. Inventory Management: Monitors inventory and communicates supplies that are needed to ensure appropriate supplies are ordered. 2. Under the direction of the Laboratory Medical Director and Director of Laboratory Services, ensures operational excellence within the POC and send-out Reference Testing department. Provides quality support and service in accordance with applicable policies, procedures and professional standards. a. Oversees daily departmental operations to ensure that quality services are provided in an efficient and effective manner, meeting or exceeding all applicable regulatory licensure and accrediting regulations. b. Develops, maintains and analyzes performance improvement outcomes to improve departmental services consistent with Hospital and regulatory requirements. c. Provides cooperation with reference labs to optimize communication and ease of information exchange to ensure correct testing requirements and specimen handling. (e.g. Quest Marlborough) 3. Assists in achieving effective fiscal management of the POC and send-out Reference Testing departments’ operations to ensure proper utilization of financial and other resources. a. Assists the Director of Laboratory Services to consistently maintain high quality and timely department services while meeting or exceeding all budgetary goals and objectives. b. Assists the Director of Laboratory Services by investigating and suggesting creative alternatives to respond to shifting demands or resources. c. Assists the Director of Laboratory Services, as needed, with preparation of budgets that are complete, accurate and developed in advance of established deadlines allowing ample opportunity to review, comment and make adjustments. d. Consistently recommends cost savings and revenue generation through innovative methods. 4. Demonstrates professional leadership and involvement within the Hospital, the System and in the community served to promote support of the Hospital. a. As appropriate, participates in a variety of Hospital committees, task forces and/or any appropriate community activities. b. Participates in education programs to remain knowledgeable of current trends and standards. c. As appropriate, provides support for the planning and implementation of Hospital or System programs and projects. Works proactively and effectively to ensure interdepartmental success at resolving process issues. d. Responsible for the effective and timely completion of special projects as assigned. 5. Responsible for the oversight of a variety of Reference Testing procedures, consistent with professional standards and departmental protocol, policies and procedures. a. Monitors reference testing pending logs and helps to resolve any issues or problems. b. Helps to maintain adequate supplies for reference testing needs. c. Notifies the Director of Laboratory Services of all unresolved issues or problems.

6. Performs POC/ Reference Lab Supervisory duties: a. Allocates time as follows; 20% administrative, 80% technical. b. May assist with staff scheduling, on an as needed basis. c. Assists with annual performance evaluations. d. Assists with annual Competency Assessments for all staff performing POC testing. e. Assists with supervisory duties required to produce laboratory results. f. Assists with reviewing the following policies with staff; Safety, Infection Control, Human Resources and OSHA policies and appropriate Laboratory Manuals. g. Participates and provides input for laboratory CLA and technical staff meetings or huddles, as needed. h. Coordinates and delegates the staff assignments for the CAP Proficiency testing program for POC testing. i. Reviews & Revises Departmental Policy & Procedure Manuals on a semi-annual basis and when required. j. Helps to evaluate and implement new testing systems. k. Assists with annual Competency Assessments. l. Performs routine quality control procedures. Supervises POC departments’ quality control program, surveillance and reporting. m. Assists in establishing and monitoring performance improvement. 7. POC Technical Responsibilities: a. Supervises operations for POC testing. b. Responsible for monitoring POC devices, including the Accuchek meters and I-STAT meters to verify results and troubleshoot problems. Performs monthly correlations and QC review. c. Oversees Proficiency Testing activities for POC testing. d. Assists with Lab staff training for POC testing. e. Oversees ordering sufficient QC and testing supplies for POC testing and QC analysis, as needed per the IQCP. f. Reviews & Revises Departmental Policy & Procedure Manuals on a bi-annual basis and as needed. g. Assists with evaluation and implementation of new testing systems. h. Assists in establishing and monitoring a Performance Improvement Program. i. Testing oversight includes: Rapid Strep, Flu testing, BNP, D-Dimer, ABG/VBG and glucometer testing. j. Participates in IQCP and continued quality assurance involved with such plan. Documents revisions in procedures needed to implement any necessary updates. 8. Arterial Blood Gas Testing a. Assists Respiratory Therapy by monitoring Arterial Blood Gas quality control. b. Acts as technical resource for the Respiratory Therapy Department. 9. Seeks appropriate counsel, as needed, from Human Resources and/or Director of Laboratory Services, responsible for effective human resource management to achieve consistent and fair treatment of all staff, high productivity and positive employee relations a. Helps to Develop and support staff to encourage high employee morale and to minimize negative turnover, overtime and absenteeism. b. Assists Director of Laboratory Services: Utilizes participative management practices in creative problem solving. c. Assists Director of Laboratory Services: Offers creative solutions or alternatives to departmental staffing and/or individual employee

discipline concerns. d. Assists with consistently and fairly interpreting and enforcing Human Resources policies, including counseling and discipline issues. e. Assists Director of Laboratory Services with performance reviews of staff consistent with the Hospital’s performance evaluation program. Standard Lead Level Responsibilities: 1. Distributes and monitors the flow of work for an assigned group of employees. Provides training and technical assistance to employees within the assigned work area. Assists supervisor in assuring that assigned employees are provided with appropriate resources, materials, and

methods. Provides

recommendations to manager or supervisor for the most efficient utilization of assigned personnel. Relays work instruction from the supervisor. 2. Complies with established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives. 3. Respects diverse views and approaches, demonstrates Standards of Respect, and contributes to creating and maintaining an environment of professionalism, tolerance, civility and acceptance toward all employees, patients and visitors. 4. Attends variety of meetings, conferences, and seminars as required or directed. 5. Demonstrates use of quality improvement in daily operations. 6. Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements. 7. Maintains, regular, reliable, and predictable attendance. 8. Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed. All responsibilities are essential job functions. II. Position Qualifications: Licensure/Certification/Education: Required: 1. Must have MT/MLT (ASCP) certification, or equivalent. 2. BS or AS in Medical Technology or related science field. Experience/Skills: Required: 1. Five to ten years of recent experience working in Clinical Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation and/or Urinalysis areas of the Laboratory. 2. Minimum of one-year experience performing High Complexity Testing. 3. Demonstrates Standards of Respect and leadership qualities. III.
