Research Program Coordinator



This position is to serve as Research Staff for The Schmitz Lab and will lead many of the operational aspects required of the federally funded DEFEND project. This staff person will identify potential participants through the electronic medical record, obtain permission to approach patients, approach patients, obtain informed consent, schedule study-related appointments, collect and coordinate study data, troubleshoot issues that occur before, during and after patient visits, and ensure that all case report forms are completed thoroughly. This staff person will work with the project manager for DEFEND if the study is audited to prepare all materials for the audit. This staff person will also work closely with the project manager for the federally funded Nurse AMIE project to provide support for that project. Many of the study tasks for DEFEND and Nurse AMIE are similar and will take place in the same locations.

Key Responsibilities include:

Patient oriented research tasks: lead data collection procedures. Use the electronic medical record to identify potential patients. Once identified, seek permission from oncology clinicians to approach. Once permission is granted, approach patients, consent, schedule appointments, collect data per protocol, and randomize patients. Use all case report forms as designed by the protocol, document all activities per good clinical research guidelines. Track adverse events. Ensure protocol adherence to the best of ability.

Data Management: Ensure data collection documentation is completed. Performing data entry into appropriate databases and organizing source documentation appropriately as needed. Gather data for the Project Manager regarding project scheduling/timelines, coordinating meetings, preparing preliminary data, researching references, and formatting accuracy according to funding agency specifications. Additionally, assist project manager with answering any queries that are issued by the sponsor, or requested by a team member for their study.


Job Summary

Coordinates protocol-related research procedures, activities, outreach, and education. Manages a study or assists with larger studies. Collects and analyzes data and complies with all policies and regulations.


Essential Functions

Data collection, data management, EMR screening, participant interaction (including approach, consent, onboarding, maintenance/retention), reporting, meeting organization, and regulatory work.


Physical Effort

Moderate physical effort required. May be required to stand/move for several hours at a time. May be required to move objects up to 50 pounds with or without assistance of equipment.
