About the Position:
Responsible for delivery of all solution architecture activities across a program of work.
Position Responsibilities (including but not limited to):
Leads development of solution architectures, ensuring consistency with specified requirements agreed with both external and internal customers. Takes full responsibility for ensuring that solution architectures balance functional, service quality and systems management requirements. Ensures that appropriate standards are adhered to. Within a business change program, manages the program's target design, policies and standards, working proactively to achieve a stable and viable design.
Communicates the technical design of a significant program and the rationale driving that design within the architecture and wider community.
Co-ordinates design activity within a program, acting as custodian of plans for the infrastructure. Takes responsibility for the technical integrity of projects, ensuring that common technical elements are recognized and that work is not unnecessarily duplicated. Assists in the development of service level agreements and any associated service guarantees. Advises on appropriate quality standards and quality control processes. Attends quality reviews as appropriate.
Monitors technical progress, ensuring that co-ordination and change control are applied to technical specifications and to the technical infrastructure. Advises on the impact of changes to the program and on the process for assessing such impact. Informs project management of major technical issues and makes recommendations on their resolution. Ensures that all changes are managed effectively, and contributes to formal reviews and evaluations when projects and programs end.
Develops new techniques for use in solution architecture. Promotes the solution architecture discipline within the wider IT community.
Drive development and maintenance of cost transparency and value tracking models for solutions across a program.
Takes an active role in the development of other staff through mentoring of more junior SA resources.
Knowledge & Experience Required:
Qualifications could come from a variety of sources, e.g. a degree in computing, science or mathematics, ISEB, British Computing Society or certification from commercial organizations such as Microsoft, Oracle etc. relevant to solution architecture.
Knowledge of new and emerging technologies and industry best practice for architecture within programs of work.
Knowledge of Integration Architectures, Data Architecture, Overall Solution Architecture and Process/Business Architecture.
Knowledge of Service Oriented Architecture (SOA), cloud computing services and systems integration TOGAF 9, Archimate, Zachman (Desirable).
Demonstrable track record in delivery of solution architecture for programs of work.
Breadth of knowledge in ensuring that relevant capabilities (e.g. telecom, systems of record, analytics) are brought together to support overall program architecture.
Experience of legacy estate rationalization.
Stakeholder management and influencing skills covering colleagues, partners / vendors and project sponsors.
To have recognized expertise in one or more of the following TOGAF architectural domains: Business, Application, Data, Technology.
Relevant experience of the full Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC) from EA to implementation including alternatives to waterfall delivery such as agile or prototyping
Utilities experience highly beneficial.
Awareness of use and value of design and architecture tools such as System Architect, Rational Rose, Casewise, Aris or equivalent.
