Position Description

The Sr. Safety Specialist supports CarMax’s health and safety program, supports daily health and safety issues for all stores, responds to questions and needs, assists with regulatory compliance matters, analyzes associate injury cases, and assists with the development of safety training programs. The position works fairly independently, relying on the EH&S Director for guidance and review.

• Oversee CarMax’s health and safety program by:
~ Monitoring health and safety program performance, determine trends and opportunities, establish goals, and develop effective action plans
~ Facilitating internal compliance with state and federal regulations and CarMax policies and procedures
~ Continuously improving safety processes and CarMax Way policies, procedures and other guidance

• Protecting the safety of CarMax associates by:
~ Analyzing injury and root cause data to determine trends and training needs
~ Developing, supporting, and maintaining injury prevention programs
~ Receive/provide store information from/to vendors/partners
~ Attending conferences and seminars to maintain and upgrade knowledge base

• Meet CarMax’s regulatory obligations by:
~ Developing/maintaining tools to maintain compliance
~ Developing/maintaining training for compliance
~ Responding to inspections, citations, and requests from regulatory agencies
~ Researching regulations/requirements applicable to existing stores
~ Providing guidance and/or input to the Operations, Engineering, Legal and Procurement departments on issues with safety implications

• Build and sustain a culture at CarMax that integrates sound environmental principles into daily operations by:
~ Respond to questions and concerns from stores, regions and corporate departments
~ Provide excellent customer service to internal (store, regional, corporate) customers
~ Fostering relationships with internal customers and partners

• Ability to communicate effectively (written and verbal), with store and regional managers and a variety of Home Office associate
• Ability to interact with regulatory inspectors and representatives in diverse manners: inquiring, mediating, authoritatively, negotiating, and others
• Ability to develop clear and concise written instructions about technical information
• Ability to present engaging and informative sessions with associates and managers
• Strong analytical skills, including the distillation and analysis of significant amounts of data in order to assess trends and determine regulatory compliance
• Ability to read and understand technical guidance from agencies and vendors
• Basic understanding of OSHA regulations and NFPA codes
• Familiarity with basic hazardous materials principles (understanding and interpretation of SDSs, laboratory data, etc.)
• Computer skills: strong Excel skills required, solid Word and PowerPoint skills, able to easily find/filter information on the internet
• Ability to balance multiple priorities and deadlines
• Must be able to build relationships with a diverse community: store and regional managers, Home Office associates of all levels, regulatory officials, internal and external attorneys, engineering and IH consultants
• Gathering and evaluating information and opinions from diverse sources (regulations, agency representatives, consultants, use data, other associates) to make solid decisions and create sound action plans

• Years of experience: four to six years of health and safety and/or industrial hygiene experience
• Education preference: B.S. in safety management, safety engineering, industrial hygiene engineering or similar field
