Position Description

The Manager of Payroll Projects and Technology plays a pivotal role in the development, implementation, maintenance and support of projects, systems and databases to support the daily activities of the Payroll department. This individual will work with end users to gather business requirements, troubleshoot system issues, develop and maintain reporting and performing configuration of the various systems. This leader within the team will inform, persuade, influence and support CarMax’s growth, and be a partner to other internal departments to assist with sound strategic decision-making.

• Lead a group of individuals in the development, enhancement, testing and evaluation of systems (including Workday and Kronos) and databases to result in accurate and efficient payroll processing
• Manage, lead and develop a team of associates through timely performance feedback delivered during day-to-day observations, individual development plan and business objective review, periodic file reviews and an annual performance evaluation
• Serve as a payroll subject matter expert in company projects that impact the Payroll team
• Contribute to developing the department’s vision with the Payroll Leadership Team to include the development of the roadmap for the department to achieve the vision and lead the team to accomplish the goals
• Manage team projects while operating with results focused mindset; develop and drive configuration and testing needs for all necessary changes to systems supporting Payroll
• Ensure that Payroll processes are documented and maintained
• Lead the team to accurately gather and analyze payroll data
• Educate business area subject matter experts on enhancements or changes made to supporting Payroll systems
• Provide thought leadership, training and mentorship to direct reports and other cross functional team members
• Partner with and influence internal teams and vendors by fostering collaboration and effective teamwork to ensure information flows freely among internal teams and departments across the organization
• Manage the relationship with the third-party equity provider
• Ability to perform on-call support, as required

• Demonstrated project management ability in leading medium sized projects

• Demonstrated ability to compare and contrast alternative approaches to meet objectives while assessing risk both quantitatively and qualitatively
• Possess strong organizational and time management skills
• Demonstrated flexibility while managing multiple priorities
• Ability to build and maintain strong relationships throughout the organization, and collaborate with other departments and teams
• Create, manage and update MS Access databases
• Data extraction by writing SQL code.

• Ability to motivate and influence across multiple levels of the organization, and willing to challenge upwards appropriately in the best interest of CarMax Understanding of Payroll and Payroll Taxes is a plus
• Being creative and offer innovative ideas to streamline processes
• Treat the sensitive personal data with the highest integrity and with strict confidentiality


• Four year degree in Information Technology, Accounting or Finance or related business experience
• Five or more years of experience in IT or in a role administering HR / Payroll systems preferred
• Kronos configuration experience preferred
• Experience in Workday – HCM, Payroll, Report Writer, EIB preferred
• Advanced Excel and MS Access skills
• CPP or FPC preferred
