This is where your legacy begins! The Leidos Innovations Center currently has an opening for a Fuel Cell Stack Engineer/Scientist to work in our San Diego, California location. We are seeking an extensively trained and highly motivated fuel cell engineer / scientist for an advanced technology program focused on fuel cell design, building and stacking, chemistry and materials integrations, and optimized energy systems.
The group has an immediate need for someone with direct experience with the construction, assembly, and operation of molten salt electrolyzers and fuel cell stacks. Ideal candidates have stack engineering expertise including bipolar plate design/production, flow-field optimization, electrolyte sealing, separator optimization and catalyst integration.
Primary Responsibilities
- Contribute to the conceptualization and development of molten salt electrolyzers and fuel cell stacks in support of government-funded efforts in the areas of power systems and sustainable energy.
- Develop and optimize fuel cell power systems including single and full stack integrations.
- Design or implement fuel cell testing or development programs.
- Conduct fuel cell testing projects, using fuel cell test stations, analytical instruments, or electrochemical diagnostics, such as cyclic voltammetry or impedance spectroscopy.
- Calculate the efficiency or power output of a fuel cell system or process.
- Characterize component or fuel cell performances by generating operating maps, defining operating conditions, identifying design refinements, or executing durability assessments.
- Fabricate prototypes of fuel cell components, assemblies, stacks, or systems.
- Effectively communicate research in team meetings, progress reports, peer-reviewed publications, and patents.
- Quickly adapt to evolving research needs, rapidly acquire new scientific knowledge and stay informed on new technologies.
- Work effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary team consisting of chemists, materials scientists, electrochemical and mechanical engineers. Lead Candidates should follow sound scientific practices and maintain effective documentation of activities and analyses.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree with 8+ years of chemical engineering, fuel cell engineering / fuel cell stacking experience, OR master’s in chemical engineering or related field with 6+ years of industry experience, OR PhD in chemistry, materials, or related field with 4+ years of industry experience.
- Experience in building, testing, and optimizing individual electrolyzers, fuel cells, and fuel cell stacks
- Understanding of materials compatibility and how they pertain to fuel cell and fuel cell stack performance
- U.S. Citizen with the ability to obtain a Secret Security Clearance.
- Team oriented with excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to interact with people from diverse areas and disciplines
- Self-motivated, detail-oriented, willing to learn, and interested in working in a team environment
- Great work ethic and an enthusiasm for problem-solving
- Good presentation, writing and communication skills
- Strong organizational and time management skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with molten salt fuels cells
- Experience with bipolar plate design/production
- Experience with flow-field optimization, electrolyte sealing, and separator optimization
- Experience with and catalyst integration
- Possess US Government Security Clearance
- Familiarity with working in a fast-paced DoD funded, milestones-driven environment

Pay Range:
Pay Range $87,100.00 - $157,450.00
