The Microbiology Intern will be a contributing member of a team that brings together leading-edge technical knowledge to provide support for the manufacturing facilities in the company.  Individuals will gain insight into the food safety and quality aspects of the food industry while assisting professionals in programs and projects. 


The Microbiology Intern serves as a resource to the microbiology team in the collection, analysis and documentation of information to support food safety programs.  Depending on their skill set, the intern experience can range from designing research projects to acquiring or growing skills in the area of Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP), Environmental Monitoring Programs (EMP), risk assessments and other tools.   He or she will be mentored and receive technical and research training, as needed.


The Microbiology Intern must be capable of working in a collaborative environment, demonstrated by sharing ideas, opinions and expertise.


Primary Responsibilities:

Provide support on research initiatives, programs (EMP, HACCP, risk assessments, GMP’s, etc.) and microbiological support to manufacturing facilities.

Tasks may include, but are not limited to:

  • Analyzing data and documentation associated with food safety programs
  • Collecting and documenting information to support microbiology and food safety programs
  • Designing or helping design research projects and validation studies
  • Helping with risk assessments, environmental monitoring programs, and HACCP reassessments
  • Exploring and analyzing new technology related to microbiology


Knowledge, Experience, and Education:

  • Completed coursework in food microbiology
  • Familiarity with HACCP and the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA)
  • Completion of  three years of undergraduate coursework strongly preferred
  • Exposure to designing and conducting research projects
  • Exposure to collecting data and information
