About the Position:
The Underground Engineering position provides engineering expertise and technical support for capital projects and operations for the National Grid underground electric transmission system. The Underground Engineer is responsible for preparing engineering deliverables for projects containing technical scope, project schedules, and project estimates as well as evaluation of technical alternatives. Other responsibilities include support of emergency events, procurement events, capacity needs/system stability for other departments, and inspection & maintenance plan development and implementation.
Position Responsibilities (including but not limited to):
Act as the technical team lead for underground transmission projects during the conceptual phase, preliminary engineering phase, detail design phase, construction phase, and closeout phase of the project lifecycle:
Prepare and evaluate transmission underground alternatives for major transmission line and substation projects
Participate in routing identification and evaluation for new underground transmission lines
Conduct site inspections to develop project scope and identify risks
Prepare engineering deliverables containing technical scope and drawings
Prepare overall project schedules to support budget forecasting and outage planning
Develop estimates for each step of the project at varying levels of accuracy
Prepare testimony to support the legal proceedings for major transmission line and substation projects.
Procure material including the preparation of technical requirements, initiation of the procurement event, bid review, contract management, and delivery performance of material vendors
Travel domestically and internationally to cable manufacturers for quality assurance visits
Monitor and deliver on technical project milestones
Provide technical support during construction procurement events
Provide technical support during the construction phase of the project cycle
Perform closeout activities to accurately close projects both financially and technically by providing work order summaries and archiving as-built information
Ensure new asset data/information is captured correctly in the appropriate asset registers
Travel within the National Grid service area (Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and upstate New York) will be required approximately 25% of the time to support capital projects
Manage overall engineering responsibilities by supplementing resources with external engineering services:
Initiate procurement events to hire external engineering resources
Prepare ?scope of work? and other documentation necessary for bid events
Review bids, award contract, and manage engineering contract
Manage the performance of external engineering service providers
Monitor and deliver on technical project milestones
Other Underground Engineering responsibilities include:
Respond to underground cable emergency events including initial operation instructions per system operation manuals, fault/damage detection, material procurement, and restoration oversight.
Provide technical support to internal and external departments for the application, operation, and maintenance of the electric transmission and distribution system.
Support underground distribution projects including the development of scope, design criteria, construction review, and data integration of deliverables.
Provide input to the five-year work plan and ten-year Strategic Asset Management Plan for future projects
Provide input to develop long-range inspection and maintenance plans, asset replacement policies, strategies, and programs
Manage internal and external resources performing cyclical inspection and maintenance programs
Knowledge & Experience Required:
A Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Technology from an ABET accredited engineering school
5 or more years of underground electric transmission engineering experience preferred
Knowledge of underground electric systems and practices
Knowledge of relevant utility industry practices, standards and legislation
Knowledge of current trends within the industry and developments in legislation or regulation
Knowledge of National Grid's business operations, company policies and practices
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
Strong analytical skills; must be able to provide timely and accurate interpretation of analyses
Ability to communicate tactfully and effectively, both orally and in writing, and must be able to present information in a clear and concise manner to large groups, senior management, regulators; internal customers and external contacts
Ability to work independently, handle multiple tasks and determine priorities in a complex environment
Ability to travel overnight outside of the normal work area as needed
Ability to beyond normal working hours or work off-hours including nights/weekends/holidays as necessary
Must have a valid driver's license and safe driving history.
