Essential Functions
These are the job duties required of the position.
Essential Functions
- Performs specific duties to enable the organize synthetic efforts of the laboratory by generating gram quantities of modified sugar and nucleoside derivatives, to be used as synthetic intermediates in the generation of a range of chemicals produced by cells and known to possess biological and physiological properties associated with pathologies of aging and metabolic diseases like cancer and diabetes.
- Repeats, reproduces and improves on known synthetic sequences developed by the laboratory.
- Purifies compounds generated by chemical synthesis using established purification protocols involving either liquid-liquid extraction, automated or manual liquid chromatography (normal or reversed phase), or crystallization by standard analytical methods such as UV, NMR, and MS.
- Characterizes and confirms the identity and purity of the materials generated.
- Identifies deviations from standard synthetic outcomes and reports such deviation with the view to improve on yields, purity, or versatility of the chemistry thus undertaken.
- Helps other researchers in the laboratory with the maintenance of the laboratory equipment and NMR instruments, and ensures best laboratory practices are implemented and the laboratory is a safe place to work.
- Maintains laboratory chemical list updated, receives and logs chemicals and places chemical orders.
- Conducts risk assessments for all new bench work and generates SoP for new instruments and protocols that are deemed to have risks associated with their implementation.
- Reports progress to the supervisor and provides experimental descriptions necessary for manuscript and grant preparations.
- Regular and prompt attendance.
- Ability to work schedule as defined and overtime as required.
- Related duties as required.
