Design, analysis, and test of complex optical designs in EO systems (primarily military fire control, missile, and laser systems). Conduct research and development in optical system concepts, layout, and detailed design, applying knowledge of geometrical and physical optics. Apply research results to achieve desired results in hardware. Initiate / support optics related manufacturing producibility or cost savings activities. Maintain the overall system optical prescription and tolerance analyses and update as required.
Support subcontractor improvements and program cost reduction activities. Willing to travel to optics suppliers in support of program requirements and schedule.
Provide timely engineering support for all optical and EO systems related issues. Interact with in-house and external suppliers to resolve manufacturing issues including change notices and defect tags.
Master's degree in optical engineering or a related discipline from an accredited university.
Strong written and oral communication skills are required as well as fluency in basic use of MS Office Excel, Word, Powerpoint, and Project in a modern Windows environment.
Candidates must be able to obtain a Secret clearance upon employment.
This position also requires an enhanced security review in accordance with Government contract requirements and it is a condition of employment that individuals hired into positions requiring program clearance obtain and maintain such clearance within sufficient time to allow Lockheed Martin to meet its business needs.
Minimum GPA: 3.0
Knowledge of geometrical and physical optics, optical aberration theory, optical design and testing.
Familiar with optical materials, including infrared materials. Familiarity with laser propagation.
Knowledge of basic radiometry and electro-optical systems analysis fundamentals.
Familiar with generating optics prescriptions for visible through long wave IR applications to support design layout, tolerances and detail lens drawings, and the ability to interact with mechanical design and manufacturing or subcontractor procurement.
Knowledgeable in the use of CODE V and/or ZEMAX software for performance optimization, tolerancing, and optical analysis.
Possess a demonstrated capability for troubleshooting and evaluation of multi-spectral complex optical, electro-optical, and laser systems.
Capable of evaluation and test of new hardware designs.
Familiar with optical component manufacturing methods and mounting techniques.
Able to communicate with mechanical designers and optics suppliers and assist with manufacturing issues.
Proficient in the use of optical tooling, interferometers and optical inspection techniques.
Able to work without supervision and make timely decisions on production related issues.
Experience with production line troubleshooting and evaluation of multi-spectral complex optical, electro-optical, and laser systems.
Working knowledge of lasers and coherent beam analysis.
Fluent in mathematical analysis programs such as Matlab, Mathcad, etc. Fundamental knowledge of stray light analysis.
Familiarity with stray light analysis tools such as FRED, LightTools, etc.
Secret security clearance with a background investigation performed within the last five years.
