Position Details
The Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of South Alabama Frederick P. Whiddon College of Medicine seeks to fill a faculty position at the rank of Research, Assistant Professor. This position will act as a full-time research scientist who plans and leads multiple aspects of core laboratory projects examining tick-virus-host interactions.

The successful candidate will plan, oversee, and execute on-going laboratory projects related to: intra-tick virus infection and dissemination biology, tick co-feeding transmission of virus, and skin immunology at the infected tick feeding site. These projects involve tick-borne flaviviruses and bunyaviruses, several of which must be manipulated within Biosafety Level-3 facilities. A variety of in vitro and in vivo approaches are used to investigate the basic biology of tick-virushost interactions with the overall goal of developing novel countermeasures to control and prevent transmission of tick-borne viruses. The successful candidate should have experience working with ticks, animals, and tick-borne pathogens. The successful candidate should also have willingness to work within a Biosafety Level-3 laboratory using in vitro and in vivo approaches to model tick-borne virus transmission and pathogenesis. The individual will be expected to uphold a collaborative environment, to facilitate the training of junior lab members (i.e. graduate students and research technologists), and possess strong verbal/written communication and organizational skills.

The individual will be expected to lead an additional line of research related to the laboratory’s overall research theme and to apply for intramural and/or extramural funding to support their line of research.

Excellent laboratory and core facilities to support this research are housed at the Whiddon College of Medicine, including state-of-the-art BSL2/(A)BSL3/ACL3 laboratories. This position is in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, one of five basic sciences departments within the Whiddon College of Medicine; therefore, ample opportunities exist for interdisciplinary interactions with basic, translational, and clinical investigators in the College. For additional information about the Department, visit www.usahealthsystem.com/microbiology. The University of South Alabama is located in historic Mobile, Alabama, a vibrant city located near beautiful gulf coast beaches.
