Position Summary:

The Quality Engineer Technician 2 will support the measurement and inspection activities at Fathom. They will also support Quality Management Systems activities as needed. This role will interact with a variety of people related to measurement projects and gage calibration. 

 

Key Responsibilities:  

  • Determine method of measurement for measurement projects.  
  • Analyzes part drawing and examines parts to determine reference points for layout.  Diagram appropriate methods of measurement.
  • Create and maintain computer programs for the CMM for all projects requiring the use of the CMM for measurements and studies.
  • Create and document part set-ups on the CMM for measurements and studies.
  • Measure all dimensions using the most appropriate method for each dimension and indicate the method on the first piece layout report.
  • Indicates out of tolerance dimensions on first piece layout report.
  • Answers any customer’s or engineer’s questions regarding the layout report results or methods of measurement.
  • Performs capability studies on specific part dimensions when requested by Engineering, Quality Assurance, or the Customer.
  • Maintains files of all layout reports, current drawings and re-measurements of corrected dimensions and revision changes.
  • Measures specified dimensions on job start-ups on certain parts when these dimensions can only be checked on the CMM.
  • Maintains the daily and archived Lab Schedule.
  • Performs gage calibrations and gage R&R studies as requested using the appropriate equipment.
  • Cleans and maintains the CMM machine. 
  • Uses Excel for various forms, reports, and capability studies to present results
  • Work independently to accomplish visual and dimensional mechanical inspection processes with minimal supervision.
  • Adhere to best safety practices.
  • Work with external vendors for outsourcing quality inspection(s).
  • Be able to read and interpret engineering level mechanical drawings.
  • Be able to establish accept/reject criteria and revision status from engineering drawings.
  • Be able to independently conduct first article and final inspection processes confirming compliance to specifications in fast paced environment.
  • Identify and document non-conformance, initiate CAPAs.
  • Notify appropriate personnel of potential rejection of products.
  • Document inspection results by completing reports and logs, and correctly and carefully inputting data into the quality database.
  • Accomplish inspection related tasks as directed by customer requirements, the quality department or upper management.
  • Participate in Root Cause Analysis and other problem-solving activities.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with all manufacturing departments.
  • Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.
  • Be a participant in team member training, internal audits.
  • Perform other Quality Management System duties, as necessary.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Associate degree in relevant field or technical certification preferred  
  • 1-3 years related work experience 
  • Minimum of one year of CMM programming and operation
  • Proficiency in interpreting engineering drawings
  • Must have demonstrated proficiency in surface plate layout techniques.
  • Understanding of SPC and Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GDT).
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of a wide variety of measurement equipment.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to work with databases and spreadsheets.
  • Must be able to work independently handling multiple tasks and priorities.

  • Certification as a Certified Mechanical Inspector from ASQ is desired
  • General knowledge of CAD software (Autodesk Inventor or Solidworks) is a plus
  • Must read and write English
  • Familiarity with both metric and imperial until system
