Job Summary:

The National Senior Director Medical Science Liaisons is responsible for the strategic leadership and management of the National Field Medical Science Liaison (MSL) team. The National Senior Director Medical Science Liaisons will have cross-functional involvement with commercial departments and other business functions for cohesive business opportunities. He/she will have the ability to combine broad therapeutic knowledge and business acumen to develop strategies at the national, regional and local level in designed therapeutic areas, and integration of research activities as appropriate.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Interpret and translate medical affairs strategies into national, regional and local territory management and provide strategic guidance to the team in the development and execution of KOL engagement
  • Proactively develop and ensure execution of the field medical plan for field-based scientific support of therapeutic area on marketed products as well as portfolio pipeline process, as appropriate
  • Align opinion leader relationships with the needs of the company on an ongoing basis
  • Contribute to the vision, strategy, and goals for the Medical Affairs Team and assure alignment with commercial/corporate strategies
  • Responsible oversight for the dissemination of scientific information within all corporate, regulatory and compliance guidelines
  • Ensure execution of all field medical educational efforts, initiatives & activities in support of the overall Medical Affairs strategy
  • Accountable for all MSL activities within acceptable practice guidelines, and delivery of results in a designated therapeutic area
  • Demonstrate clinical, scientific, and technical expertise and serve as a resource for the MSL team as well as internal and external stakeholders
  • Maintain proactive and responsible communication with Commercial, Business Development and other internal stakeholders, as it relates to field medical activities/ outcomes that support the achievement of business objectives
  • Responsible for field intelligence gathering (insights) that can provide critical information that could affect our marketed products
  • Provide ongoing feedback to internal teams to ensure clear understanding of field intelligence and incorporation into key strategic decisions
  • Identify, recommend, and develop projects aimed at enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of the MSL team ensuring operational excellence
  • Establish a productive work environment, by creating trust and respect within the group, and establish self as a business partner
  • Develop an atmosphere of confidence and strength and create opportunities to recognize and reward outstanding and individual team performance
  • Manage and develop field team members within the region including hiring, training, mentoring, performance management and career development
  • Ensure the competency of the MSL team as it relates to clinical and business competency along with regulations & guidelines
  • Effectively manage administrative activities of self and team members
  • Includes budget, database entry, continual compliance of all procedural requirements of the role, and appropriate utilization and best practice sharing
  • Manage relevant vendor resources and activities
  • Identify national, regional and local KOLs / healthcare decision makers in the osteoporosis marketplace
  • Develop and maintain strong scientific KOL relationships, through consistent communication and discussion of the current scientific literature and approved resources.
  • Identify therapeutic expertise among thought leaders, as one looks to broaden relationships through research, advisory boards, publications and educational opportunities.
  • As required, identify and support potential sites for consideration of Phase II – IV programs
  • Attend scientific conferences, specialty rounds andad boards, to stay abreast of all therapeutic knowledge
  • Respond to unsolicited requests for medical information with supported products and disease
  • Exhibit effective clinical presentation skills for internal and external audiences, and tailors content to meet audience needs
  • Identify and communicate research, clinical, and healthcare trends that help guide the organization’s research, development, and commercial strategy
Experience and Qualifications:
  • This individual must also be knowledgeable of the corporate environment and capable of being highly effective operating in a matrix environment
  • Advanced scientific or clinical degree (DO, MD, PharmD, PhD) in related Life Sciences discipline
  • Equivalent combination of education and applicable job experience may be considered
  • Minimum 6 years field medical experience required
  • Minimum 3 years of MSL management experience required
  • Willingness to travel up to 60% domestically
  • Extensive understanding of clinical, commercial, and regulatory standards and issues that affect the pharmaceutical industry and managed care landscape
  • Highly perceptive and demonstrates strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience working with all levels of management and consulting with key business stakeholders
  • Strong team player that has a customer service approach and is solution-oriented
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically, work cross-functionally, and lead teams
  • Ability to maintain the highest degree of confidentiality and integrity, represent the company's high ethics, moral behavior, and professionalism
  • Strong computer skills with demonstrated experience in working with the Microsoft suite of programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook)
  • Previous line management experience with the ability to effectively manage performance, engage team members, provide coaching, and respond to situations affecting staff
  • Ability to adapt to modification and changes to project plans, demonstrating flexibility to implement new strategies and tactics to accommodate these changes

Work Environment:

The work is performed in a remote office environment with occasional required in-person office work and meetings and frequent work in an in-person customer setting. Air, vehicle, and overnight travel is frequently required for this role. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to use hands to type, handle paperwork and sort, file or manipulate documents. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, and talk. The employee is required to utilize audio visual programs for frequent meetings and discussions with fellow employees, vendors, outside agencies and/or customers. The employee may lift and/or move up to 10 pounds occasionally.
