Clinical Research Coordinator II
The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) is committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion. All qualified applicants are encouraged to apply and will be considered without regard to race, ethnicity, religion, sex, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability, or veteran status. The University offers comprehensive benefits to eligible employees. Aside from our great health plans, we have a generous match to our 403B retirement savings plan, vacation, sick and personal days. We have Paid Winter Recess (Christmas to New Year’s Day). Finally, we offer generous educational benefits for eligible employees, their dependents and spouse/domestic partner.
PM&R is a recognized leader in advancing clinical interventions to improve the lives of individuals with disabilities. The Division of Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine specializes in the care and management of children with brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, neuromuscular disorders, and other musculoskeletal conditions. Our group’s research uses both qualitative and quantitative methods to examine the impact that raising children with disabilities has on families, improving service delivery to people with disabilities, investigating health inequity, improving critical illness recovery, and using music therapy to decrease stress and pain during hospitalization. We value the experience that people with disabilities and other minoritized identities bring to our team and will consider lived expertise for candidates with less than 2 years of professional experience.
This position is primarily located on the UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh campus in the Lawrenceville section of Pittsburgh. Eligible candidates will need to live within a reasonable daily commute of the hospital and Oakland campus. Hybrid work options will be available after successful completion of the new hire provisional period, but this position will require significant in-person work that is variable pending research study enrollment (remote work on a set schedule will not be possible because being in the hospital is necessary when eligible patients are present and for certain study tasks). The Research Coordinator will work 37.5 hours per week, dividing time between studies and related projects as needed. TB test is required.

Study protocol may include administering questionnaires, collecting bio specimen samples (ex., saliva), transcribing audio recordings, and reimbursing subjects through Vincent. Candidate will prepare application materials for the IRB, adhere strictly to approved protocols, and ensure that data and study records are in compliance with all IRB and UPMC regulations; communicate with collaborators, train new personnel, and train/mentor student researchers; assist with quantitative/qualitative analyses, preparation of text, creation of tables and figures, and support presentations, posters, manuscripts, and funding applications and reports; also responsible for some calendar management.
The ideal candidate should be able to work independently on and off site; balance multiple projects with unique protocols; accurately identify and record data points from the electronic health record; make protocol-guided decisions about ambiguous or complicated data; independently manage complex protocol timing and scheduling in a real world environment that include busy provider and subject schedules; quickly learn new software and teach others how to use it (e.g. REDCap, NVivo, Covidence, Dedoose); understand medical information; navigate often chaotic hospital spaces; explain a study in both medical and non-medical terminology; operate a tablet computer; interact comfortably with people in distress, including children; be persistent and willing to make multiple attempts at activities, such as contacting the caregivers of potential participants; problem solve and seek assistance when needed; incorporate feedback; support and motivate students and professionals, some of whom will be new to research; flex time a bit when busy study days require it; reliably operate independently and with integrity; consistently demonstrate excellent interpersonal, organizational, and computer skills; and provide references who can speak to above average work ethics.
This position will include navigating office spaces and patient accommodations (including both acute inpatient and outpatient clinic spaces) at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.
