Laboratory Research Technician



The Kitzes Lab at the University of Pittsburgh (http://kitzeslab.org) is seeking applications for a Research Technician with experience in bioacoustics, quantitative ecology, avian ecology, machine learning, and/or data science. The ideal candidate will contribute to our long-term goal of developing and applying automated acoustic survey and machine learning methods to study the ecology and conservation of birds, frogs, and other sound-producing taxa. Potential general research areas include:

- Understanding the factors driving population change in avian species across Pennsylvania
- Surveying rare and endangered frog species
- Surveying and modeling populations of secretive marsh birds
- Spatially localizing individual birds and mammals in heterogeneous landscapes using arrays of time-synchronized acoustic recorders
- Developing new methods for identifying sounds of interest in field recordings


Job Summary

Performs a variety of independent laboratory work and experiments such as determining experimental protocols and preparation of specimens and cultures. Prepares reports of findings subsequent to compilation and analyzation. Oversees specimen inventory. Develops documentation for publication; crafts manuscripts and grant proposals.


Essential Functions

Be able to recognize temperate songbirds by ear, be able to program in Python and R.


Physical Effort

Be able to hike for up to a full day over uneven terrain.
