We seek enthusiastic and dynamic educators committed to personal growth and possessing excellent communication skills. An ideal candidate should be an outstanding teacher with a recognized record of success. Modeled after the very successful Roberts Academy at Florida Southern College, the Roberts Academy at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia, is a transitional school for children with dyslexia to achieve academic success through dynamic educational programs. Students attend the Roberts Academy at Mercer University until they have mastered the skills to accommodate their learning differences and are prepared to succeed in a traditional school setting.
Responsibilities:
A successful candidate will engage elementary-age students with dyslexia in action-oriented learning that combines auditory, visual, and kinesthetic elements to teach basic concepts of reading, writing, and spelling across the curriculum, using the Orton-Gillingham approach. In support of action-oriented learning, the candidate will creatively adapt and implement lessons and materials, use varied instructional resources and strategies, and apply relevant technology to meet the varying needs of dyslexic students. Moreover, the successful candidates will promote the school’s positive culture by collaborating with colleagues and parents, encouraging student engagement and decorum, monitoring and communicating students’ progress and successes, actively participating in the school’s ongoing professional development program, becoming a member of the Orton-Gillingham Academy, and supporting the mission of the Roberts Academy at Mercer University and its leadership.
Under general supervision, the Teacher is responsible for:
Developing, planning, and implementing curriculum, lesson plans, and educational programs for student audiences within areas of expertise;
Advising, testing, and teaching student audiences in a variety of academic subjects;
Presenting and reinforcing learning concepts within a specified subject or subject area.
This is a full-time, 10-month position.
Qualifications:
Required
Hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Elementary Education, Special Education, or a related field
Two years of successful experience teaching elementary-age students
A passion for working with students with dyslexia
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Ability to maintain positive and proactive relationships with teachers, administrators, and parents
Experience with and knowledge of dyslexia and other language-based learning disabilities
Ability to maintain confidentiality
Preferred
Hold a master’s degree or higher in Elementary Education, Special Education, or a related field
Current Georgia teaching certificate
Three years or more of successful experience teaching elementary-age students with dyslexia
Knowledge of the Orton-Gillingham approach and/or other dyslexia-related remediation approaches
