Laboratory Research Technician I
This position is for the Division of Genetic and Genomic Medicine within the Department of Pediatrics. Equivalent relevant work experience may be substituted for degree requirement. This position is located at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh in Lawrenceville. PA Child Abuse History Clearance, PA State Police Criminal Record Check, and FBI Criminal Record Check will be required prior to the start of employment. Also, a current TB test will be required as a condition of employment. EEO/AA/M/F/Vets/Disabled.
Performs laboratory testing and some analysis on multiple types of specimen samples. Operates and properly sterilizes equipment and maintains inventory and assists with ordering.
• Performs research related to the molecular basis, small molecule, and gene therapy of the rare genetic disease Prader-Willi syndrome (and other genetic disorders), under the guidance of the PI, including vector generation, use of AAV viral vectors, mammalian cell culture, and mammalian models of genetic disease.
• Performs molecular biology procedures (DNA, RNA, protein, viral); mammalian cell culture, storage, transfection (plasmid vectors) and transduction (viral vectors) and microscopy; and some work with mammalian specimens (handling, breeding, genotyping, contributes to tissue dissection).
• Keeps detailed, accurate, and timely lab notebook as well as electronic data, contributes to preparation of data figures for presentation, publication, and research grants.
• Maintains laboratory cleanliness, organization, lab equipment, and ordering laboratory supplies.
Light physical activity. Requires movement at times between the laboratory and location of equipment, to the mouse room, and handling of mice; other experiments require hand dexterity; some of the work requires standing. Any lifting is light (e.g., boxes of supplies, buckets of ice, carrying trays of tissue culture cell flasks, etc.).
