Position Summary

Ava is seeking to hire a full-time Analytics and ML (Machine Learning) Ops Engineer to join our growing Analytics team, reporting to the Principal Data Scientist. Ava is looking for a software engineer with experience in data pipelines and data wrangling who can expand and optimize Ava's existing data infrastructure, extensively collaborating with our Power Resources, Salesforce, Data Science, Modeling and Analytics teams. As an Analytics & ML Ops Engineer, you will be responsible for building and maintaining scalable, reliable infrastructure to support analytics workflows, data science experimentation, and machine learning operations. Your work will empower Ava's data-driven decision-making and accelerate the development and deployment of impactful models and insights.

Position Details

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Infrastructure for Analytics & ML:

  • Design, implement, and manage robust, scalable pipelines for analytics and machine learning, ensuring seamless data ingestion, transformation, and accessibility across internal teams.
  • Collaborate closely with data scientists and analysts to productionize ML models, streamline experimentation workflows, and maintain model reproducibility and versioning.
  • Maintain and optimize data storage solutions and query performance, prioritizing cost-efficiency and scalability within Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
  • Implement ML Ops best practices, including model CI/CD, feature store management, and metadata tracking.

Automation & Monitoring:

  • Automate routine analytics workflows and model lifecycle stages to accelerate deployment and reduce manual overhead.
  • Develop monitoring and alerting systems to ensure high reliability of ML pipelines and analytics dashboards.
  • Drive internal process improvements by refactoring legacy systems and supporting the transition to containerized, serverless frameworks (e.g., GCP Cloud Run).

DevOps for Analytics, Optimization & ML:

  • Collaborate with engineering and DevOps teams to refine version control practices, manage infrastructure as code (Terraform), and integrate GitHub Actions for end-to-end automation of analytics, optimization and ML pipelines.
  • Support CI/CD pipelines for both analytics infrastructure and ML models, enabling continuous delivery of insights and innovation.

Data & Platform Governance:

  • Establish and enforce data governance, monitoring, and quality protocols to uphold analytical integrity.
  • Strengthen the use of GCP best practices in analytics and engineering, including but not limited to identity and access management (IAM) and data security practices to safeguard sensitive data and ensure regulatory compliance.

Innovation and Open Source:

  • Contribute to Ava's open-source tools and packages that support clean energy solutions and data accessibility

Cross-Functional Support:

  • Provide technical support for bug resolution, process testing, code reviews and maintain optimal performance across analytics and ML teams in EAS, Power Resources and other functional teams across Ava.
  • Play a key role in connecting engineering, analytics, and DevOps to accelerate Ava's data-driven initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related data/analytics-intensive field.
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience at the intersection of data engineering, analytics, and ML infrastructure.
  • Strong background in building and optimizing analytics and ML pipelines and tools in collaborative environments.
  • Experience maintaining production-grade infrastructure for machine learning workflows and analytics systems.
  • Proficiency in Python and SQL (BigQuery experience preferred).
  • Deep experience with Bash scripting, Linux environments, and cloud services (preferably Google Cloud Platform).
  • Experience with containerized application environments (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes) and orchestration.
  • Proficiency with workflow orchestration tools (e.g., Airflow, Luigi).
  • Strong Git/GitHub version control and DevOps collaboration practices.
  • Familiarity with infrastructure as code tools (e.g., Terraform).

Compensation and Benefits

The annual salary for this position is $178,774 with a Total Compensation of up to $196,651 annually based on performance.

Location and Working Conditions

This position will be based in Ava headquarters in Oakland, near BART. Ava's team has a hybrid approach inclusive of in-office and remote work. This role is expected to go into the office on Tuesday, Thursday, and the first Wednesday of the month.
