About the role
Forterra is seeking a skilled Linux Cybersecurity Engineer to join our team. This role requires deep
expertise in Linux system administration, cybersecurity standards, and compliance practices. You will
work closely with AWS cloud engineers, update and maintain Linux servers, enable and test STIGs and
FIPS configurations, and ensure secure integration of software systems. The ideal candidate has a strong
understanding of FIPS 140-2/140-3, Linux networking, and firewall configurations.
Responsibilities
Linux System Administration & Cybersecurity:
- Configure and deploy secure Linux-based systems, ensuring STIG and FIPS compliance.
- Collaborate with AWS cloud engineers to deploy and secure infrastructure.
- Develop automated tools using Ansible, Bash, and Python for secure system configuration and deployment.
- Track, test, and document what security controls (e.g., STIGs, FIPS) can or cannot be enabled with existing software.
- Maintain security by applying patches, hardening systems, monitoring logs, and implementing access controls.
- Ensure system resilience and compliance with cybersecurity standards.
- Create and maintain comprehensive system documentation.
System Troubleshooting & Issue Resolution:
- Diagnose and resolve Linux-specific issues including permission errors and security breaches.
- Address access control misconfigurations and auditing issues.
- Analyze system logs using dmesg, /var/log/, and other diagnostics tools.
- Debug security-related incidents using forensic tools and log analyzers.
- Optimize system performance and reinforce security.
Networking and Cyber Defense:
- Configure and troubleshoot Linux networking, including firewall setup and secure communication.
- Manage and audit VPN solutions (OpenVPN, WireGuard).
- Troubleshoot network issues including secure communication, intrusion detection, and packet analysis.
- Conduct vulnerability scans and validation of Linux deployments.
Collaboration and Communication:
- Collaborate with engineers, cybersecurity teams, and cloud engineers.
- Document and share findings from incidents and resolutions.
- Communicate effectively with stakeholders regarding system security and configurations.
- Provide detailed documentation of security configurations, incident responses, and best practices.
Qualifications
- Strong Linux troubleshooting and system hardening skills.
- Experience with secure Linux deployment and compliance.
- Proficiency in Linux administration, shell scripting, networking, and file systems.
- Familiarity with FIPS 140-2 and FIPS 140-3 requirements and testing methodologies.
- Strong understanding of Linux networking and firewall configuration.
- Scripting expertise in Python and Bash.
- Independent problem solver with attention to detail.
- Familiarity with cybersecurity protocols, standards (e.g., NIST, CIS), and technologies.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with container security (Docker, Podman).
- Expertise in Ansible (preferred), Puppet, or Chef for secure configurations.
- Advanced knowledge of firewalls, IDS/IPS, and network defense mechanisms.
- VPN configuration and secure tunneling experience.
- Familiarity with SELinux, AppArmor, and Linux kernel security modules.
- Understanding of secure boot processes, disk encryption, and endpoint protection.
Education & Experience
- Degree in Computer Engineering, Cybersecurity, Computer Science, or equivalent experience.
US Salary Range
$120,000-$130,000
The salary range for this role is an estimate and is based on a wide variety of compensation factors. The salary offered to candidates will vary based on a variety of factors including (but not limited to) relevant work experience, education, specialized training, critical expertise, training, and more. Equity in Forterra is included in most of our full-time, high-demand roles and is therefore considered part of Forterra's overall compensation package.
