Essential Job Functions:  

The Judiciary Clerk is an entry level clerical position with responsibilities of scheduling and processing civil citations in Prince George?s County District Court. Duties including preparing case files, typing court notices and transmittals, and maintaining a filing system for parking, red light camera, school bus, speed camera, stop signs and toll citations. Handles incoming mail and processes through our electronic filing system (MDEC). Assists customers at the counter and on the telephone with information about cases or court policy or procedure. Performs cashier duties as needed.

Schedules and processes civil citations by typing trial notices and transmittals. Prepares case files and ensures that all necessary documents are complete and accurate according in accordance with established court procedures. Maintains a filing system for individuals motions and finished dockets for civil citations parking, red light camera, speed camera and toll citations.

Greets and assists the public and court related personnel in person at the counter with information about cases or court policy and procedures. Answers a multi-line telephone system and assists citizens inquiring about the status of cases.

Handles and processes incoming mail and provides assistance with cashiering duties.

Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:     High school diploma (or GED equivalent).

Experience:   One (1) year of work experience, preferably in court operations or in the fields of criminal justice, parole and probation, legal or financial services.

Note:

A Bachelor?s Degree may substitute the required work experience.

A Paralegal/Associates Degree or 60 college credits may substitute the required work experience.

A Paralegal Certificate may substitute the required work experience.

Knowledge:

General office practices, procedures, and equipment.

Standard legal forms and documents used in the Judiciary.

Basic English and arithmetic to include, but not limited to, spelling, punctuation, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Skill in:

Customer service and handling problems tactfully and patiently.

Typing on a personal computer.

Accuracy and attention to detail.

Ability to:

Use standard office and business equipment including, but not limited to, personal computers, word processing, spreadsheets, database software, copier, cash register, scanner, fax machine, etc.

Use and maintain numerical filing system to locates files, until all cases are completely scanned.

Communicate clearly, tactfully, and effectively with judges, the public, police agencies, attorneys, and other court officials and personnel, both verbally and in writing.

Understand and abide by departmental rules, regulations, and procedures.

Exercise tact, diplomacy, and impartiality in dealing with the public, law enforcement personnel, and attorneys.

Follow procedures, verbal and written instructions, and protocols for any given assignment.

Use proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

Exercise independent judgment in interpreting and applying appropriate policy, procedure, rule, law, and/or regulation to a situation.

Physical Requirements:

Light work. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for light work.

Equipment, Machinery and Tools:

Personal computer, copier, fax, scanner, telephone.

Software and Computer Skills:

Outlook, Microsoft Office, File and Serve Express, Windows, MDEC.
