Job Description

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Payment Strategist provides subject matter expertise related to all forms of primary care payment, including fee-for-service and alternative/value-based payment and the impact of various payment approaches on practices. In collaboration with others, this position supports the AAFP’s advocacy efforts by analyzing and interpreting policies to understand their impact on AAFP members. The strategist monitors the payment environment and recommends actions for addressing emerging issues. This may include the development of educational resources and tools on payment or payment-related practice topics for members and chapters.

Specific aspects include:

Provides subject matter expertise (SME) and collaborates with the Manager of Payment Strategies and others in the Practice Advancement division on current and emerging physician payment issues and practice implications, including but not limited to:

  • Billing & coding (e.g., Current Procedural Terminology [CPT], International Classification of Diseases [ICD])
  • Medicare Physician Fee Schedule, including the Resource-Based Relative Value Scale and its associated update committee, the RUC.
  • Alternative payment models across Medicare, Medicaid, and Commercial markets

Unique contracting strategies, including direct contracting geographically and by employers or patients. Works collaboratively with the Government Relations (GR) staff to analyze, interpret, and contribute to AAFP comments, policies, and recommendations related to federal payment legislation or regulation and to support state chapter advocacy efforts related to payment. Monitors the payment environment to identify emerging trends, and internal knowledge and policy gaps in payment and practice areas of importance to AAFP members.

Collaborates across the division to identify and address member and/or practice information and resource needs related to existing and emerging primary care payment policies and models. Collaborates with partners across the AAFP to develop a broad range of member resources, including education (CME and non-CME), website content, blogs, and other tools as needed.

In collaboration with other staff, advises Academy members on issues related to payment and practice. Tracks member inquiries to identify themes to be addressed in broader payer advocacy efforts.

Contributes to Commission on Quality and Practice and other governance activities by leading relevant policy review, addressing resolutions, and supporting member interest groups and/or ad hoc workgroups as needed.
